Grizzlies 38, Knights 31

VANCOUVER — Limiting King’s Way Christian to eight field goals, Hoquiam’s girls avenged a previous loss Thursday and advanced to the double-elimination bracket of the District IV Class 1A Tournament.

The Grizzlies (10-11) will challenge Evergreen 1A League top seed Elma in a semifinal scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Hoquiam Square Garden. Thursday’s loss eliminated Trico League runner-up King’s Way (16-4).

Hoquiam had dropped a previous non-league decision to King’s Way, 47-29. But, playing their third game in four days, the Grizzlies had suffered from fatigue and illness in that contest.

This time, they scored the first eight points and never looked back.

“We played man (defense) for most of the game and we were outstanding,” HHS coach Mark Maxfield said. “We’ve been working hard on our defense because that’s what wins games for us. We caught them flat-footed and we were able to fast-break early.”

Karlie Krohn scored 10 of her 18 points in the second quarter to stake Hoquiam to a 22-10 halftime lead.

Rylee Vonhof and Jade Cox sank clutch free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Grizzlies withstand a King’s Way rally.

Hoquiam’s Maya Jump contributed nine rebounds and seven assists, while Vonhof dragged down six rebounds.

The Grizzlies lost starting forward Maddie German to a possible concussion in the second half. Maxfield cited Jordan Cox for her role in filling in for German.

CHEHALIS — Hannah Cook ignited a fourth-quarter charge as Willapa Valley came from behind to edge Morton-White Pass in the second round of the District IV Class 2B Tournament on Thursday.

The Vikings (14-7) face Napavine in a quarterfinal scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Rochester.

Cook scored 16 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Vikings overcame a 24-20 halftime deficit.

Willapa Valley head coach Colby Rogers said his team started performing to its normal skill level once it got over the excitement of postseason play.

“We have no one on our team with district tournament experience and once we calmed down the shots started to fall,” he said. “Once we started moving the ball our play improved.”

Britney Patrick had seven rebounds for Willapa Valley.

Wildcats 50, Pirates 40

ROCHESTER — Ocosta’s girls jumped on Adna early and did well to defend their lead to prevail in a District IV Class 2B second-round contest Thursday at Rochester.

The Wildcats take on Wahkiakum in a quarterfinal scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rochester.

The Wildcats were led by Kjirstin Hopfer who dropped 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists.

“They went on a run in the second half and we wanted to change up our defense to try to keep them off-balance,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum said. “We were able to make some stops in the fourth quarter and they had to foul but we were able to hit our free throws late in the game.”

The Wildcats (16-5) also got solid games from Kristi Raffelson and Kaylee Barnum. Raffelson grabbed 15 rebounds, while Barnum got 14 rebounds and six steals.

Indians 35, Gulls 30

CHEHALIS — Toledo survived a defensive duel with Raymond in a second-round District IV Class 2B contest Thursday at Chehalis.

The Gulls (8-14) will face either Mossyrock or Ilwaco in a loser-out game Monday at a site to be determined.

Characteristically, Raymond used its defense to stay within a couple of possessions for the majority of the game. Also as usual, the Gulls struggled with their shooting.

“The tempo and style was to our liking, but our season-long poor shooting and untimely turnovers never gave us a chance to get even,” Raymond coach Jason Koski said. “I am proud of the way our kids fought and battled throughout the contest to the end.”

Although bothered with an ailing hip, Makenna Williams topped Raymond with nine points. Isabel Mora and freshman post Hannah Miller were also cited for fine play.

ROCHESTER — A strong start paced Mossyrock past South Bend in a District IV Class 2B second-round contest Thursday at Rochester.

The Indians (14-8) play a loser-out contest against either Life Christian or Toledo on Monday at a site to be determined.

The Vikings led 18-3 after one quarter. The Indians closed the gap to six several times in the second half before Mossyrock pulled away from the foul line.

“We had a slow start against a good team,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “I’m very proud of our girls not giving up.”

Hitting four 3-pointers, Karley Reidinger topped South Bend with 17 points. Jessica Sanchez had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the Tribe. Reidinger also had five assists.

Knights 61, Grizzlies 52

VANCOUVER — Capitalizing on a slow Hoquiam start, King’s Way Christian withstood a late Grizzly rally for an opening-round win in the District IV Class 1A boys tournament on Thursday at Vancouver.

The Grizzlies (7-14) will face Stevenson in a loser-out game scheduled for Tuesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Hoquiam was again slow out of the blocks — a season-long malady for the Grizzlies. Missing many close-in shots, the Grizzlies trailed 16-4 after one quarter.

Back-to-back baskets by Payton Quintanilla and Rayyon Dayton and Matt Brown’s conventional three-point play enabled Hoquiam to draw within four with about two minutes remaining. But King’s Way’s Bryce Dodge answered with a pair of baskets and the Knights eventually pulled away from the foul line.

“We can’t afford to have slow starts like this,” HHS coach Curtis Eccles lamented. “We need to match (the opponent’s) intensity from the tipoff. Once we start settling down and playing our game, we’re playing catch-up.”

Brown finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Quintanilla added 15 points and nine boards. Rayyon Dayton and Bryson Eccles added eight rebounds each for Hoquiam.
