College Esports Club hosts tournament Saturday

Club already has 55 members

You rarely hear of competitive video-gaming in Grays Harbor County, but the recently-created Grays Harbor College Esports Club is bringing gamers together and will host a gaming tournament this Saturday afternoon.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, in room 4134 of the 4000 building at Grays Harbor College, anyone interested can partake in a one-on-one tournament for League of Legends, a computer strategy game that is one of the most popular esports both at the college and around the world.

The club, which was created in the fall, meets every week, has 55 members, and plays a variety of competitive computer and console games such as League of Legends, Overwatch and Rocket League. It’s mostly for fun, but the student-players do try to bring out their competitive sides as well.

The club’s president, first-year student Kassandra Lopez, said her main game is League of Legends, and added that it can get a bit heated at times.

“Playing league can ruin or make my day, I get all the way into it,” said Lopez.

Faculty adviser Shannon Dunnuck said the club also benefits student gamers looking to socialize more.

“I think it’s making a social aspect out of something where people normally aren’t social, alone at home,” she said. “We’re trying to make them a part of the college, just like any other group.”

The club has traveled to other college tournaments, and will also host a gaming night on March 23. For more information you can contact the club at its Facebook page titled GHC Esports. Along with bragging rights, the winner of Saturday’s tournament will be given a trophy.
