Grizzlies 6, Cougars 1
Connor Darras and Carlos Juarez scored two goals apiece as Hoquiam remained unbeaten by topping Cascade Christian in a non-league match Tuesday at Sea Breeze Oval.
Juarez scored in the 16th and 37th minutes, while Darras tallied in the 29th and 60th minutes for the Grizzlies (4-0).
Naz Mazariegos’ goal in the 39th minute gave Hoquiam a 4-1 halftime lead. Andy Garcia added a second-half marker for Hoquiam.
“It was a good overall performance by our boys,” Hoquiam coach Fidel Sanchez said. “The passes we needed to be made to the forwards were better at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half.”
Juarez and Darras were credited with fine overall performances.
Jose Juarez scored the hat trick in a previously unreported 9-0 win at Castle Rock on Saturday.
The Grizzlies visit rival Aberdeen on Thursday.
Tigers 4, Bulldogs 1
CENTRALIA — Class 2A Centralia controlled the first half in downing Montesano in a non-league contest Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.
Montesano closed the deficit to 3-1 when Connor Parkinson converted the rebound of a penalty kick in the 50th minute. The Bulldogs had some opportunities to narrow the gap even further, but Centralia hit about 35-yard shot in the late going to clinch matters.
“The first half we were a little tentative,” Monte coach Rick Denholm said. “The second half was much better.”
Midfielder Robert Thomas was cited for fine play.
The Bulldogs (0-3-1) return home Thursday to face Rochester.
BASEBALL
Bulldogs 19, Rockets 8
CASTLE ROCK — Catching fire in the final three innings, Montesano roared past Castle Rock in a non-league game Tuesday at Castle Rock.
Teegan Zillyett went 4-for-4 and lacked only a home run of hitting for the cycle to lead the Monte attack. Kobe Gallinger and Matthew Plato added three hits each for the Bulldogs (3-1).
A mercy-rule victory hardly seemed likely when the Bulldogs trailed 7-1 after two innings. But they took the lead with a seven-run third, then finished off the Rockets with a 10-run fifth.
“After the emotional win over Tumwater last night, we started out flat,” Monte coach Mike Osgood said. “Then the bats woke up.”
Ben Wills, who limited the Rockets to one run over the final three innings, picked up the victory.
Montesano hosts Overlake in a 3 p.m. game today.

PE ELL — Cub Bair and Don Ward combined on a four-hitter as Pe Ell-Willapa Valley blanked Toledo in a Central League contest Tuesday at Pe Ell.
Center fielder Tyson Nissell drove in one of the PWV runs. He also contributed heavily with a spectacular diving catch in left-center with the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning.
“That probably realistically saved the game,” Titan coach Kelly Barnum said.
The Titans (2-1, 2-2) travel to Toutle Lake for a league contest Friday.

Wildcats split
TACOMA — Ocosta and Life Christian Academy traded walk-off victories in Pacific 2B League openers Tuesday at Tacoma.
A bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Life Christian a 4-3 victory in the opening game.
Cole Hatton drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to give the Wildcats a 6-5 win in the nightcap. Remarkably, it was the fourth straight game in the Ocosta-Life Christian series that was decided in the final inning.
The Wildcats (1-1, 2-1) were somehow able to overcome eight errors in the second game — in part because Life Christian was guilty of seven miscues.
“I was really glad of how we bounced back after a really tough loss,” Ocosta coach Mike Allton said. “We battled ourselves as much as Life Christian.
Hatton drove in three runs in the second game. Coach Allton also commended the starting pitching of Hayden Hoff, who struck out nine in five innings.
Ocosta’s twice-rescheduled game with Northwest Christian is now set for next Tuesday at the GAR Park.

ROCHESTER — Unbeaten Hoquiam withstood a late Rochester rally for a non-league victory Tuesday at Rochester.
The Grizzlies (4-0) never trailed, but the Warriors closed to within a run with a two-run seventh.
Kylee Bagwell slugged a two-run homer in the third inning and Kamimi Papp drove in three runs to lead the HHS attack.
“We hit the ball well. However, defensively we made too many mental mistakes,” Hoquiam coach Keith Reynvaan said. “We threw to the wrong bases, didn’t cover bases. We gave them (extra) chances and they took advantage of them.”
He cited Jade Cox for her defense at third base.
The Grizzlies are scheduled to travel to Black Hills on Thursday.

PE ELL — Katie Adkins drove in five runs as Pe Ell-Willapa Valley thumped Toledo in a Central League game Tuesday at Pe Ell.
Adkins delivered four hits, including a pair of doubles, and Britney Patrick knocked in three runs for the reigning state 2B champion Titans.
“Katie was lights out tonight. Everything she hit was hard,” PWV coach Ken Olson said. “She’s seeing the ball really well.”
Despite a relatively slow start by their standards, the Titans closed out the game in four innings via the 15-run mercy rule.
The Titans (4-0) travel to Toutle Lake on Friday.

LACEY – Aberdeen pulled out a pair of three-set matches to edge Timberline in a non-league contest Tuesday at Lacey.
Adrianna Vasquez, in singles, and the doubles team of Rachel Tageant and Sonia Dominguez each overcame one-set deficits to prevail in three.
Tageant and Dominguez provided the decisive point with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
The doubles duo of Molly Scroggs and Abbie Bradt provided the third point by completing a straight-set win in a second-set tiebreaker.
“(We) played tough tennis today,” Bobcat coach Ashley Kohlmeier said. “We had three matches go to three sets and we showed a lot of grit when things got tight.”
The Bobcats (2-0) are scheduled to host Montesano on Thursday.
