Bobcats 2, T-Birds 1

TUMWATER — Hulizes Chavez scored with about two minutes remaining as Aberdeen handed Tumwater its first Evergreen 2A loss on Tuesday night at Tumwater Stadium.

Avenging a previous 2-0 loss to the T-Birds, the Bobcats improved to 4-2 in league and 8-3 overall.

Outshooting Tumwater, 10-4, for the contest, the Bobcats scored first when Chavez blasted a 20-yard shot into the lower left corner of the net. Trevor Dawkins and A.J. Hernandez assisted on the goal.

The T-Birds, however, equalized almost immediately and the game remained tied until the 78th minute.

Aberdeen defender Brendan Ford chipped a pass forward to Rigo Alavez, who flicked the ball past the defense and onto the feet of Chavez. The latter beat the goalkeeper one-on-one from a difficult angle.

“We’ve shown tremendous improvement from the first time we played Tumwater until now,” AHS coach Larry Fleming observed. “We’ve demonstrated good mental and physical toughness and great all-around teamwork.”

Bobcat goalkeeper Luis Soto, who made several fine saves, was credited with one of his best performances of the season. Midfielder Tony Oropeza and defenders Ford, Enrique Cuevas and Carlos Vasquez were also cited for fine play.

Tumwater took the JV match, 4-1. Carlos Campos scored the Aberdeen goal. Eric Eng and Toby Courts were commended by Bobcat assistant Alfie Bensinger.

The Cats return home Thursday to face Chehalis.

Elma girls win

ADNA — Again displaying exceptional depth, Elma’s girls took team honors at Adna’s Pirate Classic on Tuesday.

The Eagles totaled 140 points to finish 62 ahead of runner-up Forks. Pe Ell’s boys outscored Elma, 93-78.

Montesano freshman Brooke Streeter won the girls 800 meters. The Bulldogs held out many of their standouts for Friday’s Kalama Invitational.

North River’s Forrest Carbaugh was a double winner in the boys 800 and 1,600 meters. Montesano’s Sam Winter captured the short hurdles and Elma’s Ben Bridge won the boys shot put.

BASEBALL

Eagles 2, Spartans 1

ELMA — Brody Rustemeyer and Brady Shriver combined on a five-hitter as Elma edged Forks in an Evergreen 1A League game Tuesday at the Ventron Complex.

Both teams confined their scoring to the fifth inning. The Eagles (1-2, 4-5) answered a Spartan run in the top of the inning with two of their half of the fifth.

After singles by Justin Elliott and D.J. Coonse and a walk to Colten French loaded the bases, a balk brought home pinch-runner Cobey Moore with the first run. Tysen Richardson followed with a single that scored Brady Johnston (who re-entered the game to run for Coonse) with what proved to be the winning marker.

Rustemeyer struck out 10 in five innings to pick up the win.

“Our pitcher-catcher combination was really good,” Elma coach Jim Hill saikd. “I thought Carter Jacobson was fantastic behind the play. Not one ball got through and he threw a couple of guys out.”

The Eagles host East County rival Montesano on Thursday.
