Hoquiam baseball wins thriller in seventh

BASEBALL

Grizzlies 4, Spartans 3

Sean McAllister’s RBI single in the seventh inning gave Hoquiam a victory over Forks in Evergreen 1A League baseball Wednesday at Olympic Stadium.

After Grizzly starting pitcher Walker Dunn had cruised through five innings, Forks tied it on Trey Baysinger’s three-run double in the sixth.

Marques Rivera reached on an error (the lone miscue of the game) to lead off the Hoquiam seventh. He took second on a passed ball and scored when McAllister grounded a single into the hole between first and second.

“All in all, it was good to get a win, but we need to be a little more mentally tough and play all seven innings,” HHS coach Steve Jump said.

Garrett Bradley picked up the win in relief of Dunn, who struck out nine in five innings.

Second baseman Rivera contributed the defensive play of the game with a diving stop and throw that saved a run in the first inning.

The Grizzlies (3-1, 7-3) host Tenino today and travel to Forks for a doubleheader Friday.

TENINO — In a game that was called after three innings due to the mercy rule, Hoquiam softball was dominant in a 25-0 win over Tenino.

The lopsided affair also featured a combined perfect game from English Hyde and Tauni Hiliard who only had the ball put in play against them a handful of times.

Kylee Bagwell had a big day at the plate, driving in five runs and hitting a homer.

Hoquiam head coach Keith Reynvaan said Tenino struggled to make plays at times and was glad his team took advantage.

“There were lots of walks lots of hits mixed in with errors and that was basically the ball game. It was a good team effort on our part,” he said.
