Grizzlies celebrate Homecoming with 41-14 rout of Tenino

For its Homecoming football game, Hoquiam showcased some familiar standouts and unveiled a few new weapons as well.

Artimus Johnson accounted for 204 yards in the first half alone as the Grizzlies trounced Tenino, 41-14, in an Evergreen 1A League opener Friday night at Olympic Stadium.

Johnson, who didn’t touch the ball in the second half, rushed for 128 yards (including one touchdown) on nine carries and added two pass receptions for 76 yards.

The senior running back’s stellar play was no surprise. But the Grizzlies (1-0, 3-2) also provided a few unexpected treats for the Homecoming crowd.

Senior quarterback Gregory Dick, for example, caught as many touchdown passes as he threw (one apiece).

Matt Brown, a freshman tackle, shifted into the backfield frequently enough to run for one touchdown and throw for another. The Grizzlies, who normally operate almost exclusively from a spread formation, also experienced good results in moving Dick behind center for several plays in the first half.

Junior placekicker Naz Mazariegos, perfect on five conversions, also added a pair of field goals — including a 44-yard howitzer to close out the scoring.

In all, it was an impressive bounce back from last week’s 30-6 thumping at the hands of La Center. Hoquiam coach Rick Moore acknowledged that contest represented something of a wake-up call for his troops.

“In more ways than one, I think it was,” Moore said. “We knew La Center was probably the best team coming out of the south. (That game) exposed some things we needed to correct and we took a step in the right direction.”

The normally air-oriented Grizzlies stuck exclusively to the ground in covering 62 yards in six plays on their opening possession to take a lead they never relinquished.

Johnson did the bulk of the ball-carrying, but it was Dick who hit pay dirt on a 12-yard quarterback draw. Mazariegos’ PAT made it 7-0 with the game less than 2 1/2 minutes old.

Later in the first quarter, Johnson broke two tackles on a 56-yard jaunt down the right sideline to the Tenino 1-yard line. The 230-pound Brown, slotted at tailback for the next play, took a direct snap and bulled into the end zone.

“He’s a load,” Moore said of Brown. “He’s very athletic.”

One play after Hoquiam’s Chewy Muro recovered a Tenino fumble on the Beaver 37-yard line, Dick lofted a touchdown pass to Jack Adams with 19 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Adams made an even better grab on Hoquiam’s next possession, securing a long Dick pass that was tipped around by both himself and the defender and coming down inbounds for a 55-yard completion. Johnson ran it in from the 11 at the 9:25 mark of the second quarter.

After tossing a short swing pass that Johnson turned into a 75-yard gain late in the first half, Dick moved from quarterback to flanker on the next play. Again taking a direct snap, Brown lofted a pass that the 6-foot-5 Dick brought down at the back of the end zone. Mazariegos’ kick made it 35-0 at the half.

Moore, who thought his team was fatigued in the second half of the La Center game, substituted frequently in this one — reducing the number of two-way performers and pulling his starters midway through the third quarter.

Mazariegos’ two field goals, the first from 22 yards out in the third quarter, represented the sum of the Grizzly scoring in the second half.

Tenino (0-1, 3-2) scored twice against Grizzly reserves in the fourth quarter, with Garrett Kalkus tallying on a 6-yard run and junior quarterback Miles Cannon tossing an 8-yard TD pass to Guy Murrillo. Bailey O’Neal kicked both PATs.

An apparent pick six by Hoquiam reserve Austin Krause in the final minute was nullified by a block-in-the-back penalty during the runback.

Muro was the most notable defensive standout for the Grizzlies. Moore also cited the defensive work of Johnson and the secondary while also praising the play-calling of offensive coordinator Jeremy McMillan.

The Grizzlies make the relatively short trip to Elma on Friday.
