WESTPORT — The Ocosta baseball put up a crooked number in the first inning and starting pitcher Cole Hatton allowed just two hits through six as Ocosta defeated Rainier 7-3 in a 2B District playoff game on Saturday at Ocosta High School.

“Cole was just being Cole,” Wildcats head coach Mike Allton said of his sophomore hurler. “We got off to a great start and he had a great game.”

Hatton allowed just four hits while striking out eight Rainier batters to earn the complete-game victory. He also belted a two-run double in Ocosta’s seven-run first frame that proved to be too much of a hill for the Mountaineers to climb.

Hatton wasn’t the only player of his namesake to contribute to Ocosta’s offensive output as older brother Hunter Hatton also had a two-run double in the first.

Wildcats leadoff hitter Cesar Martinez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Hayden Hoff went 1-for-3 with two RBI for an Ocosta team that had six of its eight hits come in the first inning.

Cole Hatton cruised through Rainier’s lineup the first time through, retiring eight of the first nine Mountaineers he faced, a leadoff walk to Zach Lofgren being the only blemish in his first three frames.

Lofgren got Rainier on the board with a run-scoring single in the fourth inning. The Mountaineers scored an unearned run on an error a batter later.

Hatton then retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced.

With the win Ocosta (18-1 overall) advances to the 2B District semifinals where they will face Adna at 3 p.m. today at Mossyrock High School.

In other scores from Saturday’s 2B District playoffs, Rainier beat Raymond 12-1 and Onalaska defeated South Bend 6-2 in play-in games. Onalaska then fell to Adna 8-4 in their quarterfinal matchup.

Wahkiakum will face Kalama in the tournament’s other semifinal game.

Ocosta takes two

MT. VERNON — The Ocosta softball team picked up a pair of blowout victories at Mt. Vernon High School on Saturday, blitzing Friday Harbor 12-2 followed by a 16-0 shutout over LaConner.

Wildcats pitcher Erika Snider allowed two runs on six hits over five innings to lead Ocosta in the game one victory. She also cleared the bases with a first-inning single that scored three runs.

Kaylee Barnum, Kiannia Battiste and Adrianna Huerta tallied two hits apiece for Ocosta.

Similar to what it did in its game one performance, the Wildcats offense erupted for eight runs in both he firs and second innings to make quick work of LaConner in Ocosta’s second game of the day.

Ocosta (17-3) got doubles from Barnum, Battiste, Snider and Kjirstin Hopfer to power its eight-run second inning.

Mekenna Fletcher picked up the win for Ocosta, allowing one hit with three strikeouts in three innings of work.

Aberdeen’s Sidor rules at Shaner Invite

TUMWATER — Aberdeen’s Bryan Sidor won his third Male Athlete of the Meet award this season after knotching wins in the 200 and 400 at the 54th Shaner Invitational on Friday in Tumwater.

Sidor ran a season-best 22.40 to win the 200 meters and followed that up by running a 49.89 to take the 400. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the state 2A rankings in the 200 and No. 1 in the 400.

Bobcats sprinter Faith Cardenas also had a good showing at Shaner, placing in the top three in two events.

Cardenas finished third in the 200 with a season-best time of 26-48 and second in the 400 with a 59.61 mark.

Grays Harbor swept by Centralia

CENTRALIA — The Chokers were swept in a doubleheader by Centralia on Sunday, losing 8-5 and 7-4.

The Chokers fell behind 4-1 after two innings of the opener, but got to within a run on Michael Jarvis’ two-out, two-run single in the top of the third.

Grays Harbor (5-34, 4-17 NWAC West Region) tied the game the following frame on Sawyer Rhoden’s RBI single. But Centralia (12-21, 9-12) responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim a lead it would not relinquish.

The Chokers’ Jayden Cabbab had a home run in the game, his third of the season.

In the nightcap, Grays Harbor broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning by scoring on a passed ball and sacrifice fly off the bat of Jack Skinner to take a 6-4 lead.

Much like it did in the first game, Centralia’s offense responded with a crooked number on the scoreboard. The Trailblazers scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to take the 7-4 victory.
