The suspect wanted in a hit-and-run collision in Cosmopolis late Wednesday turned himself in to authorities Friday morning, according to Cosmopolis Police Deputy Chief Heath Layman.
“He turned himself in shortly after 9 a.m., offered a full confession, and was sent off with the standard citation for hit and run – unattended,” said Layman.
Layman identified the man as Ricardo Magana-Vargas, 40, of Westport, who resides at the same Melbourne Street address in Westport where the vehicle was located. He had been in Cosmopolis visiting relatives the night of the crash, said Layman.
The offending vehicle was discovered just a few hours after the collision, according to Cosmopolis Police.
The initial incident was reported to Cosmopolis Police around 11 p.m. Wednesday when reports of a silver SUV parked on D Street was struck by a black 2006 Kia Optima. Just a few hours later, police reported they had located the vehicle in Westport.
According to the Revised Code of Washington, hit-and-run of an unoccupied vehicle is a misdemeanor if the offending driver fails to at least leave a note on the struck vehicle with contact information. According to hitandrunwashington.com, a website maintained by the Seattle law firm of Geoffrey Burg, the offending driver can be subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and a maximum of 90 days in jail.
