GIRLS SOCCER

Eagles 7, Beavers 3

ELMA — Molly Johnston scored a second-half hat trick as Elma took a freewheeling contest from Tenino in an Evergreen 1A League match Tuesday at Davis Field.

The Eagles (1-1, 6-3) led only 2-1 when Johnston converted a Peyton Elliott pass in the 44th minute. The sophomore forward later scored in the 73rd and 78th minutes.

Brooke Sutherby scored twice and Elliott and Alicia Hook added one goal apiece for the Eagles. Hook also added an assist.

Elma coach Scott Rockey said his team’s output could have been even higher.

“We had a lot of opportunities, but they didn’t go in the frame,” he said. “The score easily could have been higher, but you can say that about any game.”

Johnston, Hook, Elliott and defenders Jillian Bieker and Dallas Trusty were commended for fine play.

The Eagles travel to Hoquiam on Thursday.

T-Birds 3, Bobcats 0

Tumwater outlasted Aberdeen in this Evergreen 2A Conference matchup at Stewart Field on Tuesday.

The Thunderbirds connected on a crossing pass around the 20th minute to score the game-winning goal and never looked back. Tumwater added insurance goals around the 50th and 65th minutes to seal the victory.

Aberdeen lost two players to injuries during the contest and struggled to make up for the loss.

“We started the game out real even,” Aberdeen coach Ryan Housden said. “We had opportunities the first half, but it just didn’t pan out for us. I was happy with the girls’ play. We made some really good connections and we held Tumwater off really well. With the injuries, we just kind of broke down a little bit.”

Aberdeen (1-3, 2-7) travels to Centralia on Thursday.

Wildcats fall in shootout

WESTPORT — After tying the game in the final minute of regulation, Kalama outlasted Ocosta in a shootout, 3-2 (3-2) in Central League action Tuesday night at Westport.

The Wildcats (3-4, 5-4) were poised for an upset victory when they took a 2-1 lead into the late stages of regulation play. Kalama (4-1, 7-2), however, knocked home about a 15-yard shot to tie it with 30 seconds remaining.

Proceeding directly to penalty kicks (there are no overtime sessions in the Central League), each team made two of their first three attempts in the shootout. The Denny sisters, Katelynn and Mercedes, made their shots for Ocosta.

After Ocosta’s fourth attempt was stopped by Kalama’s goalkeeper, the Chinooks converted their fourth shot. The Wildcats then missed wide left on their fifth try.

Ocosta’s Kjirstin Hopfer scored the lone first-half goal, off an assist from Rebecca Holm.

One minute after the Chinooks tied it in the 47th minute, Holm put a long looping shot from the right side into the left corner of the net.

With seven players sidelined due to injury or illness, the Wildcats suited up only 12 on Tuesday.

“We played a lot of kids who don’t normally play,” Ocosta coach Mike King noted. “They stepped up and did a really good job for us.”

Ocosta goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson made seven saves. Coach King cited the play of Holm and the Dennys.

The Wildcats host Toledo on Thursday.

Josh Burgher and Brayden Dayton added 40s for the Grizzlies.

“When you consider it’s a par-37 and most of the kids have not seen that course and it was cold, wet and windy, the guys played well,” HHS coach Larry Dublanko said. “All in all, I’m very satisfied with the production of the team.”

The Grizzlies return to Tri-Mountain next Tuesday to take on Seton Catholic.

WOODLAND — Hayden Johnson carded a 39 as Kalama beat Montesano in a Southwest Washington 1A League matchup Tuesday at the Lewis River Golf Course.

Noah Quinn topped Montesano with a 46. The Bulldogs, however, suffered from putting woes.

“The greens really gave the kids fits today,” Monte coach Lloyd Aldrich commented. “We had a couple of four-putts and even a five-putt, so that makes it tough to score. Also, the playing conditions were less than ideal.”

The Bulldogs face Seton Catholic on Thursday at Oaksridge Golf Course.
