Surfers to hit the waves in Westport for annual Clean Water Classic surf competition

The 17th annual Clean Water Classic surf competition will once again attract some of the region’s best surfers to Westhaven Park in Westport this weekend.

It’s a full weekend of surfing, music, food, drinks and more, kicking off Friday with registration at the Loge at the Sands resort, 1416 S. Montesano St. Contest check-in starts at 6 p.m., where contestants can pick up their goodie bags.

At the same time, silent auction and raffle sales will begin. A number of items will be up for grabs, donated by the contest’s many sponsors.

The event is a benefit for the Surfriders organization, a national group of surf enthusiasts who team up for ocean and beach preservation activities. They have several chapters in the state, including the local Olympic Peninsula chapter.

Contestant registration is $35 if completed ahead of time online at cleanwaterclassic.com, $45 if completed on-site Friday. There are no refunds for contestants unable to attend, but they will still get their year Surfrider membership.

Competition starts Saturday at Westhaven State Park. The exact location may vary a bit depending on the weather, according to event coordinators.

Competition divisions include the pro/am men’s and women’s shortboard, master’s shortboard, men’s and women’s longboard, master’s longboard, grand master’s longboard and stand-up paddle. The master’s divisions are for surfers age 40 and up, the grand master’s division is for ages 50-plus.

There are also divisions for kids, including juniors ages 11-14 and 15-17. There is also a “keiki with parent” division; “keiki” is Hawaiian for “child.” There is room for more than 150 competitors among the many divisions.

Surfers must check in with the beach captain 15 minutes prior to their scheduled heat. A complete list of rules can be found online at clearwaterclassic.com/contest-rules.

The after-party Saturday at the Loge at the Sands is family-friendly. Live music will be performed by Seattle dance band Killer Workout. There will be food from Ydelin Brothers Co. and a beer garden, along with Hama Hama oysters. Cold beverages will be available from the event’s top sponsor, 10 Barrel Brewing Co. Admission is free.
