The Chokers used 12 kills from Leleo Maeva to propel them to a straight-set victory over one of the teams that dashed their playoff hopes last season.

Grays Harbor defeated Centralia 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17 in a match that was tight for the first two games.

Centralia (7-13 overall, 0-2 NWAC) almost took control of the second set at 19-17 before the Chokers stormed back to score eight of the the final 10 points to win the set.

The Chokers first league game at home this season also featured a good performance from Crimson Ma’afala who helped set up hitters with 30 assists.

Chokers head coach Christine Nelson said she liked the intensity her team showed in front of a loud home crowd.

“We had a ton of energy in the building tonight and that always helps and I’m really happy with the way they played and pushed through,” she said. “We still have things to get better at but I’m happy with where we are.”

Grays Harbor (17-11, 2-0) will be home again on 7 p.m. on Friday against Pierce College.

The Aberdeen doubles pairing of Colby Miller and Eric Eng earned a win but Centralia overall was too strong as the Tigers defeated the Bobcats, 5-1, on Wednesday at Sam Benn Park.

“(Our young) team continues to get better but still is not quite able to match the more experienced Tigers,” Aberdeen head coach Andrew Duffy said. “Centralia has a state doubles team that will be back at state again this year.”

The Tigers state doubles team of Ryan Mack and Ben Corwin played as the top two singles for the Tigers on Wednesday, downing Aberdeen’s Ashdon Swope and Andrew Troeh, respectively.

The Bobcats fall to 2-7 overall, 1-6 in the 2A Evergreen League with the loss.

PREP SWIMMING

Anna Weber will be competing at state in two more events after her performance in Aberdeen’s 124-60 win over Black Hills at the Grays Harbor YMCA on Wednesday.

Webber posted state-qualifying times in the 100-meter butterfly and 200-yard medley, winning both with times of 1:03.99 and 1:12.59, respectively.

Aberdeen also had district qualifiers in the 500-yard freestyle. Kennedy Hatton came in second and posted a time of 36.90 and Patrica Bates took third with a time of 37.37 to stamp her ticket to the district meet.

Giselle Rojas also impressed in the 100-yard backstroke and took second with a time of 55.09 to qualify for districts.

“The girls are way ahead of where we were last year and they are working extremely hard in practice,” said Aberdeen swim coach Jan Simons. “They’re an awesome team, they support each other and they step up to do what they need to do.”

PREP GOLF

Monte wins over Seton Catholic, La Center

The Montesano boys golf team picked up a win over Seton Catholic and La Center on Tuesday at Tri-Mountain Golf Course.

Parker Plato led Monte (7-0) with a team-low score of 38.

Seton Catholic’s Sean Ball had the low individual score for the match with a 33.

With the victory, the Bulldogs remain undefeated on the season and will face league-rival and unbeaten Hoquiam at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Highland Golf Course.

Aberdeen remained hot as they Bobcats won their third straight match with a straight-set victory over Centralia on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

“The girls started out a little sluggish but really turned it on half way through the first game,” Aberdeen head coach Doug Basler said. “We controlled the pace and energy from that point on.”

Aberdeen won 25-15, 25-18 and 25-13.

Malynda Winston set the tone early for the Bobcats (3-3, 1-0 Evergreen 2A) with multiple kills the first two sets and and scrappy defense.

“We’ve been working on increasing our tempo in practice and it showed tonight with a much faster offense, especially outside,” Basler said. “We hit our spots on serves really well which kept Centralia out of system and gave us lots of scoring opportunities.”

Winston finished with six kills and 13 digs for Aberdeen. Kennedy Pruett had a team-high eight kills and Jalyn McDaniel had 23 assists and was 54-for-55 in setting for the Bobcats.

Wishkah Valley 3, Mary M. Knight 2

The Wishkah Valley Loggers won their league-opening game against Mary M. Knight, 3-2, on Tuesday at Mary M. Knight High School.

The Loggers (2-1, 1-0 Coastal 1B) lost the first set, 25-18, before taking the subsequent two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-23.

Mary M. Knight (2-3, 0-1) knotted up the match at two sets apiece after winning the fourth set, 25-21.

But the Loggers took the fifth and final set, 15-8, to win the 1B Coastal League matchup.

“The girls worked very hard and came out with a win,” Wishkah coach Katerina Eaton, who noted the service of Baylee Buchanan and Brooke Haskey as being key to the Loggers victory.
