Raymond 70, Pe Ell 48

A trio of players in double digits helped Raymond capture its first victory of the season when the Seagulls defeated the Trojans 70-48 in Raymond on Saturday night.

Tre Seydel led the way with 19 points and McCartney Maden chipped in with 16 points to spearhead the offensive attack.

Devine Souvannavanh had a good game in the post, scoring 13 points and blocking two shots for the Seagulls.

Souvannavanh said penetration to the paint was key to helping Raymond’s perimeter shooters find a rhythm.

“We just try to attack and get it into the paint as much as we can,” he said. “It really opens up the outside and gets our shooters open.”

Souvannavanh started off hot and scored eight of his team’s 14 points as the Seagulls jumped out to a 14-8 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.

When the Trojans made an adjustment to their defensive rotations in an attempt to close down driving lanes to the hoop, Raymond got more of its jumpers to fall in the second quarter when Seydel took over to score seven of his 19 points.

Raymond (1-4 overall) went into halftime with a 33-22 lead but Pe Ell looked to be on the verge of taking control of the game in the third quarter.

The Trojans (0-4) started the second half on a 11-2 run to cut Raymond’s lead to 35-33 with four minutes left in the third quarter, forcing Seagulls head coach Derek Rask to call a timeout.

Rask said a few adjustments to the lineup helped get his team back on track.

“I thought we came out of halftime flat an we didn’t have the energy we needed,” he said. “We made a couple of substitutions and it brought the energy that we needed. Everyone followed suit and we weathered the run.”

After surviving Pe Ell’s run, Raymond went on a run of its own, scoring eight straight points to push the lead back to double digits at 45-35.

The Seagulls kept the lead from being threatened despite a solid game from Pe Ell’s Dana Isham, who led the Trojans with 19 points and snagged three steals.

With their first win under their belts, the Seagulls will set their sights on the North BeachHyaks (1-3) for a matchup in North Beach at 7 p.m on Tuesday.

Rask said he is feeling confident his team can get its second win if they come out focused.

“I think we’ll be alright if we come out with the same effort and intensity as we did in the second half. If we approach the whole game like that we’ll be alright.”

Ocosta 51, North Beach 38

Ocosta got 15 points from Cole Hatton and some significant contributions from Kobe Rudolph off the bench en route to a 51-38 win over the North Beach Hyaks on Saturday in North Beach.

“Points were pretty hard to come by tonight,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quimby said. “It was a mixture of good defense combined with bad offense.”

Ocosta allowed just five points in the opening quarter and led by seven points after the first frame.

The roles reversed in the second quarter, with the Hyaks (1-3 overall, Pacific 2B) outscoring the Wildcats 12-6 to trail 18-17 at the half.

Ocosta (3-2, 3-1) led 32-31 late in the fourth quarter when Rudolph, a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard, came off the bench and sparked the Wildcats offense, scoring six straight points for the Wildcats on two clutch 3-pointers. He finished with nine points on three 3-point shots, all in the second half.

Paul Bjornsgard led Ocosta with 15 rebounds.

Despite his team’s struggles, Quimby was more than happy to get out of North Beach with another league win under his belt.

“It was one of those typical Saturday games where maybe some of the kids slept in a little bit and didn’t have their legs under them,” he said. “But to come out with a win, especially on the road in a rivalry game, we’ll take it.”

Ocosta plays at Life Christian on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

BOYS PREP WRESTLING

Two Raymond wrestlers win gold at Warrenton invite

Raymond’s Christian Anderson and Jack Jordan both grabbed gold in their weight classes at the Warrenton Invitational on Saturday.

Anderson won by falls in all of his matches in the 285-pound weight class with the winning pin in the championship match, taking just 38 seconds against Ilwaco’s Bryan Sparks.

Jordan was also dominant at 170, getting pinfall victories over Trent Brentsen from Clatskanie and fellow Seagull Eliot Niles. Jordan was set to wrestle teammate Luke Borden in the finals before Borden was forced to forfeit the championship match.

Before his forfeit, Borden used two falls, including a quick match against Ilwaco’s Chris Wood (52 seconds), to make it to the finals match before bowing out.

Preston Lawhead placed second in the 145 weight class, using falls in his first three matches before losing by fall to Rainier’s Brandon Isaacson in the championship matchup.

Raymond came in seventh out of 11 teams overall with 114 team points, one point behind sixth-place Knappa and 95 points behind tournament-winner Warrenton.

Raymonds grapplers will be back in action on Thursday when they head to Ocosta for a dual meet at 5 p.m.
