Aberdeen wrestling teams pick up victories

Both Bobcats boys, girls teams win at Wednesday home meet

It was a good night for Aberdeen’s wrestlers with both the girls and the boys teams earning victories with a number of pins.

Aberdeen’s girls played host to grapplers from Ocosta, Forks, Hoquiam and North Beach and won eight of their 10 matches.

The boys got a similar result in their dual meet against Hoquiam, winning 66-18.

Aberdeen’s girls cruised through many of their matches but got earned a closely-contested double overtime victory when Hailey Willson defeated Hoquiam’s Maddy Carpenter.

Aberdeen head coach Craig Yakovich said the meet was the highlight of the night for his team and was glad all his wrestlers could step on the mat in front of their home fans.

“Its’s a little stressful when they to come out under the lights and they’re in the spotlight for the first time so that was really exciting,” he said. “Overall, I’m just happy we got to showcase the girls in front of a big crowd tonight. Anytime we can do that it’s a god thing.”

On the boy’s side, Aberdeen got off to a hot start with two pins from Ivan Ruvalcaba and Kobie Fall to get off to a hot start in its dual win over Hoquiam

Hoquiam was behind the eight ball coming into the dual as a number of injuries forced less-experienced wrestlers to step in and caused six forfeits for the Grizzlies.

Hoquiam head coach Terry Helland said he isn’t concerned this result will set a trend for his team moving forward.

“We were in a tough spot there and we were missing two state levels kids that probably could have scored points for us,” he said.”That’s the way it goes. Injuries happen and kids have other things going on, but the kids that were here wrestled hard.”

Aberdeen head coach Jimmy Martin was pleased to get the win but isn’t reading too far into Wednesday’s result either.

He said he is already looking forward to when the teams meet again in Hoquiam on Jan. 24.

“I don’t think this is what Hoquiam’s team really is. The better matchup will be the next one, but it might be us that has the injury bug the next time,” Martin said.
