A man was shot in the leg in Aberdeen early Christmas morning after allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle, the Aberdeen Police Department said in a press release.

Just before 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aberdeen officers were dispatched to the 400 Block of North Washington Street for a reported shooting.

The officers located both the 28-year-old male victim and the 54-year-old male who fired at him outside a residence. Police applied a tourniquet to the injured man’s leg before paramedics took him to Grays Harbor Community Hospital. The weapon was a handgun, according to Lieutenant Dale Green.

The man who fired the shot provided a statement and is currently cooperating with the police investigation.

Based on statements and initial investigation, police said it appears the 28-year-old was attempting to steal a vehicle and ran at the homeowner when confronted. After being treated and released from the hospital, the 28-year-old was booked into the Aberdeen jail under suspicion of second-degree burglary and attempted motor vehicle theft, and the shooter was not arrested. The case will be forwarded to the Grays Harbor County Prosecutor’s Office for further review.
