Chokers sink Clippers

OLYMPIA — A rough start turned into a solid finish for Grays Harbor College on Wednesday when the Chokers rallied in the first game and went on to sweep host South Puget Sound College 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 in a NWAC Western Division match.

Lexi Fetui led the Chokers (5-3, 17-16) with 12 kills and 11 digs, with Leleo Maeva adding 11 kills. Bria Buchanan added seven kills and Brooke Spoor six kills to the GHC attack. Sara Carveo dished out 15 assists and brought up 10 digs and Megan Gibson finished with 10 assists.

“Tonight was about battling and playing together,” GHC head coach Christine Nelson said. “We didn’t play well together at the beginning. We made unforced errors, silly mistakes. They didn’t go away through the match, but when we play our game and play it at our speed, we are tough to stop.”

On Friday, GHC will host Lower Columbia College at Sam Benn Gym in a pivotal division match.

Evergreen 2A Conference Meet

TUMWATER — Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas and Kyle Hurd each finished in the top 3 at the Evergreen 2A Conference meet at Pioneer Park in Tumwater on Wednesday.

Cardenas traversed the muddy course, which was shortened by almost 400 meters due to flooding, in 19:11.27 to place second in the girls race, just behind Ava Shackell of Black Hills, 18:50.02.

Hurd ran a time of 15:41.3 in the boys race and finished third. Tumwater’s Evan Groat won the race in 15:28.9, while his teammate Joseph Morrissey crossed two seconds later.

Tumwater won the team competition for boys and girls, while Aberdeen finished fifth as a team in both.

“It was very slippery with the mud and grass and many spills were taken,” Aberdeen coach April Meissner said. “Kyle played it cautiously today to avoid any falls, and it was quite a race between him and the two Tumwater boys.”

Aberdeen will travel to Woodland to take part in District IV 2A Championships at Lewis River Golf Course on Oct. 29 with the top 15 runners moving on to the state 2A cross country meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Nov. 5.

Boys Golf

District IV 2A meet

LONGVIEW — At Mint Valley Country Club, Aberdeen moved three of its four golfers into today’s final round of the District IV 2A boys golf tournament on Wednesday.

Grant Larson led the Bobcats with an 85, with Brendan King and Blake Swenson each carding 89s to move on. The cut was at 91, which eliminated Jaxson Larson at 93.

“Overall, it was a mixed bag of emotions,” AHS head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “Grant and Blake had career rounds — Grant hit a 40 on the front nine for his best-ever score and Blake scored a 43 on the front nine for his best nine-hole score. Brendan’s gameplan didn’t go as planned and Jaxson was disappointed.”

Sundstrom noted that the district-to-state allocations haven’t been determined, so he has guessed his golfers will need to finish in the top-16 spots for a shot at the state tournament in the spring.

Chehalis’ Alexander Will leads the first-day field with an even-par 71, which included a 3-under 32 on the front nine.

Today’s second round will start at 9:30 a.m.

VOLLEYBALL

Indians sweep Warriors

SOUTH BEND — South Bend controlled the match throughout as the Indians cruised to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-11) win over Chief Leschi in a Pacific 2B League match at Koplitz Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

The Tribe (2-3, 4-7) was led by Jessica Sanchez, who finished with seven kills. Karley Reidinger and Riley Hampton each added two kills and Reidinger brought up 12 digs.

“The kids played hard and with a lot of energy,” South Bend coach Jackie Sanchez said. “I saw some really good volleyball tonight.”

Jackie Sanchez cited Katelyn Doyle and Kenzy Boothe for their serving.

South Bend won the JV match 25-14, 25-12.

South Bend hosts Raymond today.

Raiders 12, Chokers 0

LAKEWOOD — Pierce College needed just two minutes to score the game-winning goal as it rolled past Grays Harbor College on Wednesday in an NWAC West Division match.

The Raiders’ Lakeisha Rembert scored in the second minute to start what would be a seven-goal effort for Pierce in the first half. Amber Thompson and Leah Nisco each recorded hat tricks on the night as Pierce added five more goals in the second half.

“They got their first goal two minutes in and that set the tone for the whole game,” GHC coach Chris Schumacher said. “We really never got going. Toward the end of the first half and the start of the second half, we picked it up, but we seemed to just lose focus again at the end. Once we get down, it just seems to be like a snowball effect.”

GHC (1-12-1) hosts Green River at 1 p.m. today.
