A nearly head-on collision in South Aberdeen sent five people to the hospital on Wednesday, including one passenger who sustained serious injuries and was transferred to Harborview Medical Center.
At about 4:16 p.m., Aberdeen Police and Fire personnel responded to a two-person collision in the 500 Block of West Curtis Street. According to a report from the Aberdeen Police Department, a 40-year-old man from Beaverton, Ore., was driving westbound in a 2009 Chrysler Sebring, with his 18-year-old daughter in the front passenger seat and his 13-year-old daughter in the right rear seat.
The man was recovering from a cold, and began having a severe coughing episode, the report says. The Sebring was in the left westbound lane, but began veering to the left and crossed into the eastbound lanes.
Meanwhile, a 76-year-old woman from Aberdeen was driving eastbound with her 82-year-old husband in the passenger seat of a 2018 Ford Escape. They were in the right eastbound lane driving towards home when the Sebring crossed the left lane and struck them nearly head-on.
Both vehicles were believed to be traveling at or about 30 to 35 mph at the time of the collision, and there was no evidence of braking by either vehicle beforehand. Multiple airbags were deployed in both vehicles.
All five occupants of the two vehicles were transported by ambulance to Grays Harbor Community Hospital. The 13-year-old was transferred to the Harborview Medical Center for serious injuries. Evidence at the scene is leading investigators to believe the 13-year-old may not have been wearing a seatbelt.
The investigation has not provided evidence that alcohol or drugs were involved in the collision. The road remained closed until just before 9 p.m., while members of the Aberdeen Police Department’s Collision Investigation Team worked at the site.
An officer with the Hoquiam Police Department provided assistance with running some of the technology equipment deployed during the investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
