Grizzlies 151, Chinooks 183

With four players breaking 40, Hoquiam wrapped up a share of the Southwest Washington 1A League dual championship by beating Kalama on Thursday at Highland Golf Course.

John Sand carded an even-par 35 to lead the Grizzlies. Ryan Cole added a 38 and Brayden Dayton and Josh Burgher 39s.

“It was a good day,” HHS coach Larry Dublanko said. “It was good prep for our up-and-coming district tournament.”

He cited Cole for particularly significant improvement.

The Grizzlies are the defending district 1A champions. District competition opens Monday at Tumwater Valley.

Sand also shot 35 at Oaksridge Golf Course on Wednesday as Hoquiam downed Elma, 155-197. Burgher carded a 39 for the Grizzlies. Trace Thompson and Kilian Acuff shared Elma medalist honors with 44s.

Kalama (183) — Hayden Johnson 46, Ethan Payne 49, Trevor Peterson 59, Austin Pratt 59, Colby Tucker 40, Elijah Norton 48.

ELMA — Registering easily its best score of the season, Montesano downed rival Elma in a regular-season ending match Thursday at Oaksridge Golf Course.

Montesano’s Payson Parker fired a sizzling 37 to take medalist honors, with four other Bulldogs breaking 45.

Trace Thompson paced Elma with a 41.

“That is our lowest team total of the year by 10 strokes,” Monte coach Lloyd Aldrich said. “We’ve gotten a lot of consistent play from our top four kids and today a couple of others joined the party. Payson has been on the cusp of a round like this for a long time, so it was terrific to see him break through today.”

Both East County teams will next compete in the District IV Class 1A tournament beginning Monday at Tumwater Valley.

Montesano (166) — Payson Parker 37, Austin Peterson 50, Matthew Plato 42, Noah Quinn 44, Ryan Nicholson 44, Kyler Doll 43.

Elma (197) — Trace Thompson 41, Kilian Acuff 45, Bastion Marseille 57, Blake Hendrick 54, Jared Moline 68, Russ Hensley 66.

Bulldogs nip Grizzlies in shootout

It all came down to the final penalty kick in a shootout between Montesano and Hoquiam on Thursday. Hoquiam’s final kick sailed over the crossbar to give the Bulldogs a 0-0 (4-3) win in an Evergreen 1A League match at Olympic Stadium.

After the two sides played to a scoreless tie in regulation and overtime, a shootout would decided this league tilt. Montesano adjusted the penalty kick order after losing to Tenino in a shootout on Tuesday and the adjustment paid off. The Bulldogs had Samantha Stanfield, Morgan Kersker, Cheyann Bartlett and Peyton Poler each made kicks, while Hoquiam had makes from Casey Mode, Emma Skinner and Judy Renteria to set up a kick by Maya Jump to keep the shootout going. However, Jump missed just high of the crossbar

“It was a whole team effort and everybody stepped up and did their job,” Montesano assistant coach Rick Denholm said. “We controlled the pace of the game. As soon as we had some quick attacks, they dropped back five and six at a time and they did a good job of dropping their line as we gained possession.”

Hoquiam focused on defense to keep the attacking Bulldogs at bay throughout the contest, but the Grizzlies did have a few scoring chances with Skinner running onto through balls. In the overtime period, the Grizzlies crossed the ball and had the ball bouncing in front when Skinner was able to get a kick on net. Montesano goalkeeper Haylee Perkinson made a diving save to keep the score knotted at 0-0.

Perkinson and Hoquiam’s Jade Cox put on a show for the fans with plenty of fantastic saves. Cox finished with 20 saves.

“We played amazing soccer, we defended well and we move the ball around well,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said. “Overall, we played probably the best game of the season.”

Grannemann cited defenders Bianca Lopez and Brooke Bogdanovich for their efforts.

Montesano (5-1, 9-3-2) host Forks on Tuesday, while Hoquiam (3-3, 6-8) travels to Elma.

Eagles 3, Beavers 1

TENINO — Brooke Sutherby scored twice as Elma downed Tenino in an Evergreen 2A League contest Thursday at Tenino.

Sutherby converted a crossing pass from Jillian Bieker in the sixth minute to open the scoring. Molly Johnston made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute.

After Tenino scored late in the first half, the Eagles spent most of the second half peppering the Beaver goal to no avail. Sutherby finally gave Elma some insurance by scoring in the 74th minute, assisted by Destry Dineen.

Although the Eagles failed to cash in on all of their scoring chances, winning coach Scott Rockey was generally pleased with his club’s showing.

“The girls possessed well, moved the ball well,” Rockey said. “All in all, it was a solid game.”

Sutherby and defender Dallas Trusty were cited for fine performances.

The Eagles (4-1, 9-3) will play three games in three nights next week. They’ll first host Hoquiam on Tuesday.

Wildcats 2, Tigers 0

WESTPORT — After several breakaways were smothered by Napavine’s goalkeeper, Ocosta changed its strategy and found enough scoring to produce a home win in Central 2B League play on Thursday.

An inside-out pass from the front of the net by Katelynn Denny allowed Kjirstin Hopfer to send the ball into the net from the outside in the 37th minute.

After more breakaways were knocked down and saved, Ocosta (6-6, 8-6) got an insurance goal in the 73rd minute when Maia Soderlund dropped the ball off to Teal Mitby, who drilled it low and just inside the right post for the score.

“We had a ton of opportunities, but just couldn’t convert them,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We just dribbed in too close to the goalkeeper.”

Mitby was cited for her overall play, along with goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson for a shutout and Piper Furford and Mercedes Denny for their defense.

On Tuesday, Ocosta hosts Winlock.

T-Birds 7, Bobcats 0

TUMWATER — League-leading Tumwater trounced Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference contest Thursday at Tumwater Stadium.

Details were not reported. The Bobcats (4-4, 5-8) return to Tumwater Stadium this afternoon to face Black Hills in a makeup game.

Gators 11, Chokers 0

Green River racked up seven goals in the first half and rolled to victory over Grays Harbor College in an NWAC Western Division match at Stewart Field on Thursday.

The Gators took control early with Grayce Kovarik scoring the first of her four total goals in the sixth minute followed by markers from Emily Shover in the 12th min and Brittany Pringle in the 13th minute.

The Chokers lone goal came in the 21st minute when Mary Davis kicked in a shot to cut the lead to two goals, but that is as close as GHC would come to the Gators.

Green River’s Haileigh Frese capped what would be a four-goal run with back-to-back goals to close out the half with the Gators up 7-1.

The Gators put up four more goals in the second half with Kovarik kicking the ball home twice.

GHC (0-11, 1-13-1) travels to Lower Columbia on Saturday.
