Bulldogs sweep

MONTESANO — On Senior Night, Montesano started slow and warmed up for a sweep of visiting Forks 25-23, 25-15, 25-13 in Evergreen 1A League play at Bo Griffith Gym on Tuesday.

The win completed an unbeaten regular season for the Bulldogs (8-0, 14-0).

All seven Montesano seniors — Hannah Manley, Jaden Schoch, Shayla Floch, Hailee Dierks, Jordan Spradlin, Josie Talley and Josie Toyra — played in the match and were cited by Montesano head coach Debbie Gibson for their contributions.

“It is a great group to coach and they will be missed,” Gibson said. “We were a little emotional to start the first set. We found our rhythm and slowly got into our game.”

Spradlin led all hitters with 21 kills and Floch added 17 kills for the league champions, who’ll return to action next Wednesday at home in the district tournament.

Talley brought up 15 digs and was one of three, along with Manley and Toyra, with 100 percent serving. Junior Hannah Hatcher dished out 39 assists.

Montesano won the junior varsity match, 25-14, 25-20. In the C Squad match, Montesano knocked off Tenino 25-12, 25-23.

Seagulls in three

ILWACO — Despite coming out flat, Raymond had more than a few aces up its sleeves in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-14) win over Ilwaco in a Pacific 2B League match on Tuesday.

The Seagulls (6-1, 11-2) racked up 13 aces in the match to roll past the Fishermen.

“We played flat tonight,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “We only had 15 kills as a team. Our offensive rhythm was a little off. We served tough and that is the one part of the game that we dominated was serves and serve-receive.”

Hailee Smith led the Gulls with seven kills and seven aces while going 19-for-21 in service. Mikayla Collins added four kills for Raymond.

Ilwaco won the JV match, while Raymond came out on top in the C-squad match.

Raymond travels to Chief Leschi today.

Elks sweep Wishkah

WISHKAH — Lake Quinault struggled at the service line, but redeemed itself at the net to outlast rival Wishkah 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 in a Coastal 1B League match on Tuesday night.

The Elks missed 18 serves on the night, but found their offense at the net. Alex Blackburn and Liz Guardarrama each had five kills and Katelyn Neeland brought up 11 digs.

“Honestly, I felt like we lost the games in serving, but won them in kills and hitting,” Quinault head coach Sue Kalama said. “We struggled with our communication and we couldn’t tie our hits together. But, we came out with the win.”

“The girls played harder than they have all season,” Wishkah head coach Darci McMaster added. “I am proud of them for fighting for every last point.”

The Loggerettes (5-4) honored seniors Tiana Warren, Kati Poisal, Haylie Marbut and Hailee Jewell before the match.

On Thursday, Lake Quinault hosts Naselle, while Wishkah travels to Taholah.

Bobcats fall in three

CENTRALIA — An Aberdeen strong start was stopped by a serving run that allowed host Centralia to roll to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-10 in Evergreen 2A Conference play on Tuesday night.

The Bobcats led 12-7 in the first game before the Tigers tied it up with five straight serves. From there, Aberdeen couldn’t regain its momentum.

“We were moving well and we put all of the pressure on them,” AHS head coach Doug Basler said. “We lost confidence, missed serves and had hitting mistakes. We put the pressure back onto ourselves. That carried over into the second and third games.”

Tamara Corona was cited for her work as libero and Sydni Blood was cited for her hitting.

Centralia won the junior varsity match in three games and the C Squad match in two games.

On Thursday, Aberdeen (1-8, 1-12) hosts Rochester to finish the regular season.

Vikings lose in three

LACEY — Northwest Christian capitalized on Willapa Valley hitting miscues to nip the Vikings, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, in a Pacific League match Tuesday at Lacey.

No Viking was credited with more than two kills.

“We just didn’t play with enough urgency,” Valley coach Lori Snodgrass said. “We were kind of flat-footed and had a lot of hitting errors. If we played as we had been playing (recently), it could have been different.”

Brooke Friese and sisters Grace and Abby Hodel collected six digs apiece for the Vikings (5-3, 7-7). Hannah Cook had a 100 percent serving night.

Concluding their regular season with this match, the Vikings open District IV Class 2B competition Saturday, possibly at Kalama.

GIRLS SOCCER

Eagles 2, Grizzlies 1

ELMA — Peyton Elliott’s penalty kick midway through the second half proved the difference as Elma edged Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League match Tuesday at Davis Field.

With the win, the Eagles (5-1, 10-3) set up a league title showdown with Montesano tonight, also at Davis Field.

Although the Grizzlies were far more competitive than in a 5-0 loss to the Eagles earlier this month, Elma never trailed Tuesday.

Elma’s Brooke Sutherby produced the only goal of the first half by converting a breakaway in the 26th minute.

After the Grizzlies were called for a handball in the box in the 55th minute, Elliott connected on the penalty kick.

Hoquiam cut the margin to one some 10 minutes later when a long Alexis Wonderly shot deflected off a defender and past the goalkeeper. But the Grizzlies (3-4, 6-9) were unable to equalize.

“We were out of sorts, we didn’t play as well as we should have,” Elma coach Scott Rockey said. “Our passing wasn’t as good as it has been or should have been.”

Hoquiam suited up only 13 players and finished with 12 in a physical contest. The Grizzlies were without starting defender Isabel Hernandez due to injury.

“It got very, very rough,” HHS coach Drew Grannemann said. “We were playing down to begin with and then injury upon injury happened during the match.”

He cited Wonderly and defenders Jade Cox and Bianca Lopez for their performances.

The Grizzlies host Tenino on Thursday in a match that will determine the league’s final district berth.

Wildcats 5, Cardinals 0

WESTPORT — Winlock’s defensive strategy broke down when Katelynn Denny scored twice in four minutes to kick off Ocosta’s Central 2B League win on Tuesday night.

Denny scored in the 30th minute on a deflection off a defender, then converted a corner kick from Teal Mitby for a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute.

Rebecca Holm, a one-year exchange student who was honored before the game, scored when she stole a goal kick and returned the ball into the net in the 57th minute.

Kennedy Moreno finished the scoring with a goal in the 75th and 79th minutes for the Wildcats (7-6, 9-6).

“We controlled the entire game,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said.

Defenders Piper Furford, Elliott Watkins, Mercedes Denny and Abriana Ness were cited for their work.

On Thursday, Ocosta finishes the regular season with a road trip to Kalama.

Bulldogs 10, Spartans 0

MONTESANO — Montesano romped past Forks in an Evergreen 1A League match Tuesday at Rottle Field.

Details were not reported. The Bulldogs (6-1, 10-3-2) visit Elma in a league title showdown tonight.

Warriors 2, Bobcats 0

ROCHESTER — Aberdeen was upended by Rochester in an Evergreen 2A Conference contest Tuesday at Rochester.

Details were not reported. The loss closes out the regular season for the Bobcats at 4-6 in league and 5-10 overall.

As the Evergreen 2A Conference’s third seed, Aberdeen will open District IV competition on the road Saturday against the Greater St. Helens 2A League runner-up.

Hockinson, Ridgefield and Columbia River are in a virtual three-way tie for the GSH lead.
