David Ellis Glenn, “The Music Man,” went to be with our Lord on Jan. 12, 2019, surrounded by family at his Elma home.
Dave was born in Elma on Jan. 17, 1934, to Albert and Mary (Wheeler) Glenn. They then moved to Satsop, where his father owned and operated the International Harvester dealership.
In his younger years, Dave attended the Satsop School. He later graduated from Elma High School in 1951. He married Barbara Lundberg in 1952. They had four children. They later divorced. He married Jo Breckel Clary in 1963. They have been married 55 years.
In his earlier years, Dave had been a dairy farmer, equipment/vehicle salesman, and owned and operated the Satsop Grocery store. Later, he owned and drove trucks during the construction of the nuke site. He then was a safety inspector for Labor and Industries where he later retired.
Dave was recognized as the 1998 Citizen of the Year by the Elma Chamber of Commerce. He served as a board member for The ARC of Grays Harbor and also volunteered his time with Hope from Horses and the Special Olympics. He especially enjoyed doing these activities with his special buddy, Paul Larsen. His love for music began at a young age. Dave, his parents, and siblings, belonged to the Satsop Methodist Church where his love for singing and trumpet playing first began. He enjoyed singing in barbershop quartets. One of the quartets gained national recognition by winning first place in the Grange Competition in Indiana. Dave also enjoyed racing dragsters and funny cars. He is well known for his music truck, participating in many local parades. His love for people and singing allowed him to sing in nursing homes, where he brought much joy and many smiles to the residents.
For many years, he has performed with and hosted many musical groups at the Music Factory in Elma. Often times they performed to a packed house! He was always willing to sing at weddings and funerals.
Dave is survived by his wife Josephine, daughters Shelley (Dell) Carter, Sherry Erickson, Shawnie (Rick) Rakevich, and son David Glenn Jr., two step-sons Mike (Lori) Clary and Jerry (Holly) Clary. He has 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Also, he has brothers Bill (Janet) Glenn, Larry (Jeanne) Glenn, Dan (Carleen) Glenn, and sister Marilyn (Doug) Sayan.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1200 Soule Ave. in Hoquiam.
