Elma 3, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 2
Two days after Kali Rambo gave the Elma Eagles a walk-off win over a perennial state power they hadn’t defeated in four years, Kassedy Olson repeated the feat.
Olson’s game-winning bloop single to left field gave Elma a 3-2 victory over Pe Ell-Willapa Valley on Thursday in Elma.
With the game tied at two runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh inning, Elma (9-0, 2-0 Evergreen 1A) got off to a promising start as Chloe Velasco worked a walk off of PWV pitcher Olivia Matlock.
Once on base, Velasco advanced to third on two passed balls with one out.
Matlock then struck out Jalyn Whipple and Olivia Cain as the contest appeared to be headed to extra innings.
Elma’s Emily Newberry kept the inning alive by working a walk, which set the table for Olson, who slapped a single that fell in front of Titans left fielder Presley Peterson.

Olson said the speed difference between Matlock who finished the game in the circle and Camryn Adkins didn’t throw off her timing.
“When I slap the ball, I can adjust really easily from a slower pitcher to a faster pitcher,” she said. “I either wanted to get it on the ground or into a gap.”
After breaking a four-year losing streak to Montesano on Tuesday, Elma head coach Roger Elliot said it felt good to beat another team that the Eagles hadn’t bested since 2015.
“Kassedy came up with a great hit. I don’t know if the girl lost it in the sun or if it was properly placed, but we’ll take it,” he said. “That’s another team that we struggled and it’s the first time we beat them in four years. That’s a really tough team.”
Before the Eagles could come up with the late-inning dramatics, they had to fight back after surrendering a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
PWV (5-2, 4-1 Pacific 2B) had a little trouble getting to Elma starting pitcher Destry Dineen and broke through in the fourth inning.
Britney Patrick started the inning off with a bang as her lead-off triple hit the fence in the left-center field gap. The Titans wasted no time driving her in as Matlock came up with an RBI double to give PWV the 1-0 lead. PWV expanded the lead to 2-0 when Matlock came around to score on a single from Jeorgi Ritzman.
After surrendering the second run of the inning Elliot made a pitching change, bringing Quin Mikel into the circle. Mikel stopped the bleeding and got a strikeout to end the inning and limit the damage.
Elliot thought Dineen pitched well, but thinks the difference between her style and Mikel’s is something he can to take advantage of going forward.
“We’ve been doing that this year so far and it’s something we’ll probably keep doing,” he said. “Destry is a little quicker and Quin is a little slower and she has some good movement on her ball so it works. It keeps batters off-balance.”
Dineen helped spark the comeback with a lead-off single in the first and later came around to score.
An RBI single from Olson drove in Cain after she reached on error which allowed Elma to pull even.

The Titans also had opportunities to reclaim the lead in the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn’t take advantage of runners in scoring position.
“I think we’re a better team than we showed today,” Titans head coach Ken Olson said.“We had runners in scoring position in four out of seven innings and someone has to step up. It didn’t happen today”
Both teams will get some time off over spring break before returning to action on April 9.
PWV get back to league play with a road doubleheader against South Bend at 3 p.m.
Elma will also turn its attention to a league opponent when the Eagles take on Hoquiam at 4 p.m.
Elliot said he is expecting a difficult matchup against the Grizzlies when his players return from the long layoff.
“We’ll get a couple of practices in, but it’s always tough to come back because you go right in to league,” he said. “We have Hoquiam and they are always tough on us. We always battle back and forth with them.”
Olson is looking forward to getting back on the field and building on the team’s momentum, but for now she’s still enjoying Elma’s most recent late-game victories.
“We’re all still in awe from Tuesday, so this is just incredible,” she said.

Montesano 11, Hoquiam 1
The Montesano Bulldogs scored four runs in the first and got a strong pitching performance from Lindsay Pace en route to an 11-1 win over Hoquiam on Thursday in Hoquiam.
Monte’s bats took no time to get going, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Jessica Stanfield’s three-run home run.
Hoquiam (3-2, 1-1 Evergreen 1A) responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a leadoff home run from Maya Jump.
But that was all the offense the Grizzlies would muster, as Pace would allow just two more hits and held Hoquiam scoreless the rest of the way.
Monte (5-2, 1-1) extended its lead to 8-1 with another four spot in the fourth inning. Lexi Lovel led off the inning with a homer to center. With one out, Monte’s Emma Jensen drove in Paige Lisherness with an RBI single. Three batters later, junior Kate Klinger singled to right with the sacks full, scoring Jensen and Matti Ekerson.
The Bulldogs put the game in 10-run rule territory with another three runs in the fifth, scoring a run on an errors followed by Janessa Otterstetter’s two-run single.
Pace closed things out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth to give Monte the 11-1 victory, its first league win of the season. The senior hurler finished the game allowing three hits while striking out seven in five innings pitched.
Otterstetter finished the game going 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Kinger also had three hits with two RBI.
Jump was the only Grizzly batter to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Hoquiam’s Tauni Hilliard took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Ocosta 18, North Beach 3
Ocosta’s Kaylee Barnum and Kiana Battiste each had a big day at the plate in the Wildcats’ 18-3 victory over North Beach in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday in Ocean Shores.
Battiste went 4-for-4 with two doubles and an inside the park three-run home run in Ocosta’s nine-run fourth inning.
Barnum also had a round-tripper in the Ocosta fourth, belting a two-run homer as the senior drove in five runs in the game.
Ocosta (2-3, 2-2 Pacific 2B) had 19 hits in the contest and also got multi-hit games from Krystal Morales, Mekenna Fletcher, Kristi Raffelson and Ronni Graham.
North Beach (4-2, 2-2) scored its three runs in the bottom of the third inning on run-scoring singles by Maddy Eang and Letty Carcaise.
Fletcher earned the victory for Ocosta, allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Ocosta socked 19 hits en route to a 21-0 win over North Beach in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Friday.
Evalyn Marsh had a team-best four hits and five RBI as Ocosta scored eight runs in the first and 13 runs in the second to earn a three inning mercy-rule victory.
Emily Snider hit a two-run inside the park home run in Ocosta’s 13-run second inning.
Ocosta had 19 hits and had six players record multi-hit games.

Taholah sweeps doubleheader with Lake Quinault
Taholah scored runs early and often in both legs of its doubleheader against Lake Quinault, winning the first game 21-13 and taking the night cap 18-3.
Angel Anchetta, Kayleah McCrory and Tomkia Grover scored three runs each in the first game, giving pitcher Natayla Russel enough run support to pick up the win.
Taholah did a better job of limiting Lake Quintault’s offense in the second game, dispatching the Loggers 18-3 in three innings.
Chitwhins pitcher Chastity Seymore struck out three batters in three innings of work and carried a shutout into the third inning.

Willapa Valley girls take second at Pacific League meet
Brooke Friese picked up some key points for Wishkah Valley, wining two events to help the the Vikings girls take second in the team standings at the Pacific Leauge Meet at Ilwaco High School on Thursday.
Friese won the 100 meters with a time of 13.53 and the pole vault with a height of 10 feet while also taking second in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-hundred meter dash.
Hannah Cook also won two events, taking gold in the 200 meters with a time 28.60 and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.12
Wishkah Valley also saw some success at the meet with freshman Charlize Gutierrez winning the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:09.36.
Joey Brenneman picked up some points for the the Loggers on the boy’s side, posting a time of 16.95 to take gold in the 110-meter hurdles.

Hoquiam’s Straka breaks freshman state record
Hoquiam freshman Tyara Straka broke a Washington state record that had stood for nearly 30 years at a 1A/2B league meet on Thursday in Montesano.
Straka won the girls shot put event with a throw of 44 feet, 10.25 inches, setting the girls freshman state record in that event. The previous record was held by Battle Ground High School’s Johanna Gambill, who set a mark of 44-09 in 1990.
The Montesano boys and Hoquiam girls track teams took the top spots at the four-team meet.
Monte’s boys scored 101 points while Ocosta scored 83 points followed by Ocosta (39) and Forks (25).
Hoquiam’s girls scored 91 points to cruise to victory over Montesano, which placed second with 69 points. Ocosta (60) placed third followed by Forks (30).

Elma sweeps team titles at home league meet
Elma’s boys and girls track and field teams took first place in the team events at a Pacific League Meet on Tuesday in Elma.
Elma’s boys scored 154 points to beat second-place Northwest Christian (132) while the Eagles’ girls team scored 171 points to beat NW Christian (151) by 20 points.
Elma’s Cody Vollan ran a personal-best 23.30 to win the 200 meter race and a 51.65 to take the top spot in the 400.
Eagles thrower Ben Bridge also won two events for Elma, winning the shot put (43-11.50) and discus (126-02).
Tucker Simpkins (100, 12.06) and Jaedyn Edenstrom (long jump, 18-09) also won events for the Eagles.
The Elma girls team was led by Jillian Bieker, who won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.57 and 51.15, respectively.
Sarah Bridge (shot put, 32-01) and Jalyn Sackrider (discus, 104-11) also earned event victories for the Eagles.
Elma nearly swept all the relay events, losing just the girls 4×400 to Northwest Christian.
North Beach’s Lorin Cox won the girls 100 with a time of 13.54.

PREP GIRLS GOLF
Black Hills 84, Aberdeen 44
A young Aberdeen team had to battle a more experienced Black Hills group and some inclement weather in a season-opening 84-44 loss to the Wolves at Tumwater Valley Golf Course on Thursday.
Senior Ryder Heikkila led the way with 19 points (Stableford scoring) while fellow senior Katie Lewis chipped in with 15 points.
Heikiila and Lewis were the only Bobcats to crack double digits as Black Hills benefited from a 33-point performance from McKenna Canty.
Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said it was good to see improvement from his young golfers in spite of the wet weather.
“It was very pleasant for five holes, then it turned ugly. It started raining sideways and the temperature dropped quickly. Umbrellas were flying everywhere,” he said. “As a team, we played so much better than we did at the Jamboree. We are asking our three freshmen to step into a varsity role and they are improving each day.”
Aberdeen will get some time off before for spring break before hitting the links again on April 10 to face WF West on the road.
The Bobcats and Bearcats are scheduled tee off on 3:30 p.m.
