A trio of Willapa Harbor schools survived the first day of the District IV 2B volleyball tournament on Saturday. Raymond was the only Twin Harbors competitors to win their first match of the day with a win over Onalaska, but the Seagulls dropped their second match and will move into the consolation bracket.
Both Willapa Valley and South Bend lost their first contest of the tournament, but came back to win the second match and move on to Wednesday’s play.
Ocosta and North Beach each made early exits with losses in their first two matches.
RAYMOND
After acing Onalaska for a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) sweep in their District IV 2B tournament opener, Raymond came up short against Mossyrock for a 3-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-7, 25-21) loss at Raymond.
Raymond (13-3) cruised to victory over the Loggers, fueled by seven kills from Mikayla Collins and six kills each from Hailee Smith and Winter Newman. The Seagulls finished with 16 aces as a team.
The Gulls win set up the winner-to-state match against Mossyrock. The Vikings took advantage of a few mismatches and came out on top.
“We just weren’t firing on all cylinders,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “Mossyrock did a pretty good job serving and we got caught in a rotation a couple games and just couldn’t get out of it. They got up on us and we just couldn’t work our way out of it. They just beat us.”
Smith had eight kills and four blocks for the Gulls, while Aubree Gardner had 30 digs against the Vikings.
The Seagulls will face Morton-White Pass at 5:30 p.m. at Onalaska in a loser-out contest on Wednesday.
WILLAPA VALLEY
The Vikings lost their opener to Wahkiakum 3-0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-19) and had to take the floor without a break against Toledo. However, Willapa Valley rebounded to sweep the Indians 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-21) at Kalama.
Valley (8-8) got a boost from young players Olivia Betrozoff, Jeorgi Ritzman and Raina Jones, who stepped up when senior Abby Hodel was sidelined with a injury against the Mules.
“We played really well in games one and three and there were a lot of really long rallies and a lot of hustle,” Valley coach Lori Snodgrass said.
Hodel came back to help lead the Vikings to the win against Toledo. Hodel had nine digs, while her sister Grace had five kills and eight blocks. Grace Hodel had 13 blocks total on the day.
Madison Huber was 17-for-17 serving with three aces against Toledo, while Hannah Cook was a perfect 24-for-24 serving on the day.
“We were scrappy at times in that game and served with consistency,” Snodgrass said. “I think our youth and our hustle paid off.”
Snodgrass cited Katelyn McGough, Brook Friese and Sidney Pollard for their play in both games.
Willapa Valley will take on Adna at 4 p.m. at Napavine in a loser-out contest on Wendesday.
SOUTH BEND
South Bend couldn’t get much offensive momentum in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-11) loss to Mossyrock, but the Tribe came out focused to sweep Onalaska 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-12) at Raymond.
“We struggled a bit on serve receive and it hindered us a bit in setting up a good offense,” South Bend coach Jackie Sanchez said of the Tribe’s contest against Mossyrock.
South Bend (6-10) was led by six kills and six blocks from Karley Reidinger as well as three kills, five blocks and 10 digs by Jessica Sanchez.
Against the Loggers, Jessica Sanchez had five kills and four blocks, while Reidinger and Kenzy Boothe each added four kills. Reidinger added 11 digs and Katelyn Doyle had seven digs.
“The kids played very focused to win,” Jackie Sanchez said. “Last year, we didn’t win a match at districts, so we really had that focus to win this match.”
South Bend will take on Life Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. at Napavine in a loser-out contest on Wednesday.
OCOSTA
The Wildcats were swept 3-0 by Toutle Lake in their opener at Life Christian Academy and came up short in a 3-1 loss to Morton-White Pass to end the season with a 9-7 record.
NORTH BEACH
North Beach was swept in both matches at Napavine on Saturday. The Hyaks lost to the host Tigers 3-0 and dropped the second match to Northwest Christian 3-0. North Beach finished with a 4-11 record.
