Prep Roundup: Aberdeen holds on for 1-0 win over Rochester

Also: Raymond-South Bend fall to Tenino, 3-1

Aberdeen made an early goal stand in a 1-0 win over Rochester Friday night at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The lone goal of the contest came when Miguel Martinez crossed the ball over to Angel Hernandez, who fired a far-post shot from the left-outside edge of the box to beat Rochester goalkeeper Dominic Heinrich in the 23rd minute

Aberdeen (7-1-1, 4-1 Evergreen 2A) had more chances to score throughout the match, but couldn’t convert on any of its additional scoring opportunities.

Bobcats head coach Larry Fleming was upset that his team couldn’t convert on its breakaways and said he would have liked to have won by a wider margin.

“I had to be disappointed when we win but we kept an inferior team in the game by not finishing over and over,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen us have that many one-on-one breakaways with the goalie without scoring one.”

Aberdeen continued to put pressure on the Warriors (3-7, 0-5) and kept Rochester from mounting an attack of its own, but the Warriors nearly found an equalizer with corner kick in stoppage time.

Aberdeen’s Christian Harp ended up with the clean sheet in his first start in goal this season, but struggled to catch the cross into the box, leading to a scramble in front of the Bobcats’ goal in the match’s final seconds.

Aberdeen survived the late-game scare and will take on Centralia in a road game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Aberdeen bested Centralia 4-3 at Stewart Field on March 25 and Fleming is expecting a tougher matchup this time around.

“Our touch and possession is better from where it was against Black Hills, so I’m hoping that keeps up on Tuesday,” he said. “Obviously, we’re going to have to finish a little better and really defend because they’re going to be a solid team. They’re going to be improved from the last time we beat them here.”
