Creme of county crop win at Shelton Invite
The Twin Harbors area was well represented as a handful of the best local track and field athletes competed at the 59th Shelton Invitational on Saturday at Highclimber Stadium in Shelton.
Girls
Mary M. Knight’s Kaylee Sowle won three events to lead all local athletes at the event.
Sowle swept the girls jumping events, clearing 5-08 to win the high jump and 17-03.75 to claim victory in the long jump, the only competitor to break 17 feet in the process.
The Owls senior rounded out the event with a mark of 36-09.25 to win the triple jump, two inches better than Bremerton’s Tyishea McWhorter.
Willapa Valley’s Brooke Friese continued her dominance in the girls pole vault competition, clearing 10-09.00 to win the event by nine inches.
The mark set a new personal record for Friese, who owns the top vault in the 2B section this season.
The Twin Harbors area was also well represented in the girls hurdles races, with Elma’s Jillian Bieker (15.84) and Willapa Valley’s Hannah Cook (16.19) and Friese (16.26) finishing 2-3-4 in the 100-meter hurdles behind Bremerton’s Lauryn Chandler (15.35).
Cook and Bieker also figured prominently in the 300-meter hurdles race, finishing third and fourth with times of 47.76 and 48.44, respectively.
Other notable performances from local athletes were Hoquiam’s Tyara Straka, who placed second in the shot put (40-00.50) and third in the discus (107-08).
South Bend’s Jessica Sanchez placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 103-07 and Ocosta’s Devyn Martin placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of five feet even.
Boys
Four local boys won individual events on Saturday, led by some familiar names to area track and field fans.
Elma’s Cody Vollan won the 400 meters with a mark of 49.93 — the fastest of his prep career — to beat Tumwater’s Brad Blackburn (50.68).
Vollan also earned a medal in the 200, running a personal-record time of 22.78 to finished behind Sequim’s Darren Salazar (22.43).
Aberdeen’s Wyatt Johnson took home gold in the boys long jump with a season-best mark of 20-11.75, beating Central Kitsap’s Alex Mirador by 1 1/4 inches.
The North Beach Hyaks had two athletes place in the top three, with Isaiah Richards getting the victory with a mark of 12-09, taking fewer attempts than Tumwater’s Austin St. Louis, who also cleared that mark. The Hyaks’ Garrett Armbruster cleared 12-06 to place third.
Taholah’s JauVon James-Juneau took the victory in the javelin with a throw of 173-06, which was nearly 10 feet better than Gig Harbor’s Jake Jennings (163-10) and the top throw of any 1B section athlete this season.
Other notable performances by local athletes came from Hoquiam’s Caleb Larsen, who placed second in the shot put with a PR-mark of 50-08; and Elma’s Ben Bridge, who took third in the discus with a throw of 131-02.

Monte boys win at 11th Annual BCS Invite
Led by the Sam Winter’s four top-five finishes, the Montesano boys track and field team took first place at the 11th Annual BCS Invite on Saturday at Interlake Stadium in Bellevue.
Winter won the triple jump with a mark of 40-10.75, more than a foot better than teammate Aydan Darst, who placed second with a mark of 39-04.25.
Winter also placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.05 (personal record), fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-04, and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.25 (season record).
In addition to Darst’s second-place finish in the triple jump, three additional Montesano athletes placed second on Saturday. Garrett Iverson leaped a PR of 5-10 in the high jump, Conner Hollatz placed second in the javelin with a throw of 142-06 and Tanner Nicklas took the second spot in the shot put with a mark of 47-07.75.
Monte’s Bryce Whipple placed third in the long jump with a mark of 19-02.75.
The Bulldogs scored 107 points to place first in the boys team standings. South Whidbey (99.5) and Morton-White Pass (74) finished second and third, respectively.
On the girls side, Montesano took the top two spots in the girls 400, with Madolyn Olson picking up the victory with a time of 1:01.64, edging teammate Jaiden Morrison (1:01.98).
Monte’s girls team also got a second-place finish in the girls 4×200, where Sierra Birdsall, Olson, Morrison and Alma Muro recorded a time of 1:52.03.
