Montesano 196, Elma 231

Montesano’s winning streak reached four matches on Tuesday thanks to low scores from Glory Grubb and Mylana Parker as the Bulldogs beat Elma 196-231 at Oaksridge Golf Course.

Montesano (5-3, 5-1 Evergreen 1A) was led by Parker, who shot the lowest score of the day with a 41 for a 9-hole round. She was followed closely by Grubb, who posted a 42.

Iza Cope posted a 55 and Myah Gallagher rounded out the scoring with a 58.

Parker said she felt confident whenever she had to pull one of her irons out of the bag and said her confidence in approach shots grew after picking up a birdie early in the round.

“The first hole I started off nice. I had a drive that wasn’t looking too good but kicked back into the middle,” she said. “Then I hit my iron shot within about two feet of the hole and tapped in for birdie.”

Elma’s first pair of golfers wasn’t able to close the gap as the Eagles (1-6, 1-5) got scores of 56 out of Corrie Shedd and Klover Johnson each.

Kaelyn Burgher ended the day with a 59 and Ella Moore rounded out the top four with a 60.

Elma head coach Rich Walker said he is pleased with the progress his golfers have made since a lot of his roster is new to the sport.

“We have lots of first year players and every match they get a little bit better,” he said. “Our ones and twos played well. They were both in the 50s and that is progress,” he said.

Elma still has one more league match on the schedule as the Eagles will face Hoquiam at Highlands Golf Course at 3 today.

Montesano has completed its league schedule and will play at the Duke Streeter Tournament against three other teams at the Peninsula Golf Club in Port Angeles.

Montesano golf coach Doug Galloway said his team has had consistent play from Parker and Grubb while the rest of his golfers have continued to improve throughout the season.

“We’re still improving, which is nice. I’m really pleased with the way Glory and Mylana have been consistent throughout the process and now it’s just about just doing the little things,” he said. “We have to make two-putts instead of three, one chip instead of two chips. That’ll lower everybody’s score.”

Aberdeen 38, Rochester 34

Aberdeen benefited from solid rounds by senior Ryder Heikkila and Katie Lewis en route to a 38-34 victory over Rochester on Tuesday at Riverside Golf Course.

Lewis led all scorers with 18 points (Stableford scoring system) followed closely by Heikkila, who scored 17 points for the Bobcats.

“Both of them improved their scores by five strokes from last week’s match at Riverside,” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “We are so proud of our team today.”

Aberdeen hosts W.F. West at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Aberdeen 4, Tumwater 3

Aberdeen picked up its first win of the season on the last day of the season with a tight 4-3 win at Tumwater on Tuesday.

Aberdeen (1-11, 0-7 Evergreen 2A) and Tumwater (9-3, 5-2) tied at 3-3 after six matches were completed. The Bobcats were awarded the victory based on the number of sets won, 8-6.

Aberdeen’s Chase Baller picked up a win in her singles match, defeating Kriza Mullen 6-4 in the first set and pulling out a close 7-5 victory in the second set.

The duos of Abbie Bradt/Molly Scroggs and Kylie Weiberg/Kiley Ehly also picked up victories as Aberdeen took two out of the three doubles matches.

Aberdeen head coach Ashley Kolmeier said the win hints at what the team will be capable of next season.

“It’s been a tough but fun rebuilding season. We have so much potential in the seasons ahead,” she said. “I know the team is proud to end the season with a win and I am proud of the progress we’ve made.”

BOYS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 5, Rochester 2

Aberdeen poured it on late with four goals in the second half in a 5-2 road win over Rochester on Tuesday.

Aberdeen (10-3-1, 7-3 Evergreen 2A) finished the regular season with a win after putting up four goals in the second half.

Hulizes Chavez had a particularly strong game, scoring a pair of goals in the 61st and 66th minutes. Alavez also had a good game, scoring a goal in the 57th minute and assisting on Chavez’s 66th minute goal.

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said it was good to see his team move the ball well despite issues with the playing surface.

“It was a good effort, especially on a uneven grass surface, and we were strong in the air and passed well,” he said.

Aberdeen will now get a few a days off before facing Woodland in the first round of District IV 2A playoffs. First whistle is scheduled for 12 p.m on Saturday in Woodland.

Montesano 3, Tenino 1

Montesano’s Luis Muro was involved in all three Bulldogs goals and Monte beat Tenino 3-1 on Tuesday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

Muro opened the scoring when he took possession at the top of the Beavers’ 18-yard box and tucked a shot inside the far post for a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the match.

With the score 1-0 in the second half, Muro and Monte struck again. The Bulldogs’ senior forward received a through pass from junior midfielder Jose Melendez then beat the Tenino keeper on another far-post shot for his second goal of the game, giving Monte a 2-0 lead in the 55th minute.

Tenino (3-10-1, 3-8 Evergreen 1A) cut the lead in half in the waning minutes of the game when a long shot off the foot of Leo Lloyd went over the head of Monte goalkeeper Van Reynolds and into the back of the net with 2:30 left on the clock.

But just a half-minute later, Muro sent a pass through the Beavers defense to Max Urbanski, who beat the oncoming goalkeeper from 10-yards out to put Montesano up 3-1.

Montesano (8-8, 8-4) currently sits third in the 1A Evergreen League and will play Toledo at 7 p.m. on Monday on the road.
