A 32-year-old Hoquiam man was arrested for DUI and making false or misleading statements after Hoquiam Police say he crashed his car into a power pole in the 1900 block of Riverside Avenue early Sunday morning.
Hoquiam officers were called around 1 a.m. and found a vehicle that failed to negotiate a turn from Sumner Avenue onto Riverside Avenue, struck a curb and several signs for the Hoquiam Farmers Market and Jay’s Farm Stand, and collided with the power pole. Sgt. Jeff Salstrom reported there was extensive damage to the vehicle and the air bags had deployed.
A man standing next to the driver’s door told police he had been walking by and came across the wreck, but evidence indicated he had been the driver, said Salstrom, who added the man appeared to be intoxicated. The man told police he had no identification and gave a false name at first, which came back to someone with a suspended driver’s license and outstanding warrants. The man’s ID was located in his pockets, as were the keys to the wrecked car, and the suspect admitted he had given a cousin’s name.
The man was processed for suspicion of driving under the influence and booked into the Hoquiam City Jail on charges of DUI and making a false or misleading statement to a public official.
