Aberdeen 107, WF West 60
Aberdeen swimming continued its trend of qualifying for state events as Anna Weber and Annika Eisele both posted impressive times in the Bobcats’ 107-60 win over WF West at the YMCA of Grays Harbor in Hoquiam on Wednesday.
Weber won the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:11.07 to solidify her spot at the state meet and Eisele qualified for state in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.88.
Aberdeen’s Zoey Cook qualified for districts in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:28.80.
Aberdeen swim coach Jan Simons said there are still things to work on early in the season but she thinks her swimmers are headed in the right direction.
“It was a good meet for them. We had some good things and we have some things to work on, mainly finishes and that sort of thing.” she said. “We got two individual state times today, so I thought thought the girls did well.”
WF West brought a smaller roster to the event, which allowed the Bobcats to get away from some of their normal lineups in the relays and allow some of their freshmen and sophomores a chance to compete.
Simons said it was a valuable experience for her younger swimmers to be involved in close races.
“I mixed things up because I don’t think it’s necessary to lap a team that’s a smaller team. On the 200 and 400 free relays, I just lined up my four faster swimmers up in four lanes and they led off so they could get a split,” she said. “I mixed kids up to give them an opportunity to swim and make up a difference in a relay, so that was fun. I like to watch good races.”
In addition to some of the underclassmen who got try their hand in the relays, the Aberdeen coaching staff also got a look at some younger athletes in the long-distance races.
Maydsen Baudais and Natalie Miles both competed in the 500-yard freestyle relay. Baudais also competed in the 200-yard individual medley later in the day.
Simons said she was pleased that some young swimmers attempted the 500 since they may have more opportunities to compete in those events further down the line.
“My swimmers who don’t have as much competitive swimming experience, they’re better opportunities are in the longer distances, but it’s overwhelming for them,” she said. “Everybody on the team would rather swim a 50 freestyle, so it takes guts and courage to swim the 500.”
Aberdeen will try to send more qualifiers to districts and state when the Bobcats host Black Hills at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Napavine 2, Ocosta 1
Ocosta struck first but a late goal was too much for the Wildcats to overcome as they fell to Napavine 2-1 at home on Wednesday.
The Wildcats (2-3-1) got on the board early when Trinity White scored on an assist from Katelynn Denny in the seventh minute.
Napavine (3-3) tied the score with a goal in the 16th minute and secured the win with another goal in the final minute of the contest.
The Wildcats stayed in the game thanks in part to the play by sweeper Maia Soderlund, who took care of the ball, connecting on 13 of 14 passes.
Ocosta travels to Life Christian Saturday for their final non-league game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
Ocosta splits pair of matches at tournament
Ocosta played two closely-contested matches on Wednesday as the Wildcats competed at the Raymond Tournament on Wednesday.
The Wildcats defeated Willapa Valley 3-2 earlier in the day before losing to Naselle 3-2 later in the evening.
Layne Martin and Kiana Morrow spearheaded the offensive attack with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Emily Snider did well spreading the ball around the court as well, ending the contest with 33 assists.
The second match of the day also went five games, including a tense fifth set that required Naselle to score 20 points to edge out Ocosta.
Kiana Morrow had a standout game at middle blocker with nine kills and four blocks.
Ocosta will start its league schedule on Thursday with a home game against South Bend at 7 p.m.
