Black Hills 3, Aberdeen 0

Aberdeen showed fight in the third set but couldn’t extend the match as the Bobcats fell to 3-0 to Black Hills on Wednesday night at Sam Benn Gym in Aberdeen.

The Wolves (4-3, 3-0 Evergreen 2A) maintained a spotless league record by downing Aberdeen (0-3, 0-8) by scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-23.

Playing without senior outside hitter Kennedy Pruett, the Bobcats shuffled the lineup and relied heavily on Allison Troseth, who had a team-leading six kills and two aces.

Kaely Chum was responsible for setting up the offense with eight assists.

“Pruett wasn’t here tonight, so we had to switch up our lineup unexpectedly. Factoring that in, I was very pleased with our effort here tonight,” Aberdeen head coach Doug Basler said. “We struggled that first game since we had new people in spots they weren’t normally at and we didn’t have a chance to practice that. I thought there was a little bit of shell shock that first game.”

Aberdeen struggled to find offense in the first two sets but was in a position to push the contest to a fourth set late in the match.

More of Troseth’s shots were falling in the third set and some Black Hills hitting errors put Aberdeen up 20-14 late in the set.

The Bobcats couldn’t hang on, however, with Black Hills regaining its footing to tie the set at 23 and eventually scoring the next two points to win in straight sets.

Basler said he hopes that his players can build on the success they found toward the end of the match.

“We made a game of it in that third one with lots of really good energy,” he said. “I was pleased with the effort after losing the first game pretty big, and we didn’t have our normal players in to play and it would be really easy to just give up on that night.”

The search for Aberdeen’s first win continues with a Tuesday road match against Rochester at 7 p.m.

Montesano 3, Forks 1

Montesano rebounded well from Tuesday’s loss Elma with a 3-1 home win against Forks on Wednesday night.

Monte (7-2, 2-1 Evergreen 1A) got a team-leading 17 kills from Emma Kahler to get past Forks (7-2, 2-1) with scores of 25-22, 18-25, 25-13 and 25-20.

The win puts the Bulldogs and Spartans in a temporary tie for second place in the league standings.

Montesano passed the ball well as a team with Myah Gallinger and Janessa Otterstetter coming up with 21 assists each.

Bulldogs head coach Pat Pace said it felt good to see his team get back on track after losing the East County rivalry match the night before.

“It was nice to see the team bounce back from the loss last night to Elma. Emma Kahler had a career-high 17 kills while her setters, Myah and Janessa, did a great job sharing the wealth with all the hitters,” he said. “I thought McKenna Wecker and Landree Dohrmann did a good job keeping several rallies going with their defensive play in the back row.”

Montesano will be back on the court for a 5:30 p.m. road match against Tenino on Monday.

Tenino 4, Hoquiam 1

Hoquiam played with more of a spark, but it didn’t translate on the scoreboard with a 4-1 loss to Tenino on Wednesday night at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

The league-leading Beavers (9-0-1, 4-0 Evergreen 1A) picked up an early goal in the ninth minute and added an insurance marker in the 35th minute.

Hoquiam (3-6, 1-3) temporarily cut the lead in half with a successful penalty kick off the foot of Taylor Strom in stoppage time in the first half.

Tenino grabbed two more goals in the 50th and 65th minutes to put the game away.

Despite the loss, Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann was actually encouraged by the result.

“Looking beyond the result, tonight was something special. We were able to turn a corner and find an aggressive, high pressure, possession-oriented style of game that we’ve been searching for all season,” he said. “If we continue this level of play and eliminate goals off set pieces, I have high hopes for the rest of the season.”

Hoquiam will be looking for its second league win of the season when it travels to Forks for a 6 p.m. match on Tuesday.

Ocosta 2, Winlock 1

Ocosta won its second game in a row without substitutes with a 2-1 road win over Winlock on Wednesday.

Freshman Nevaeh Smith gave the Wildcats (5-5-1, 2-2 Pacific 2B) the edge in the 44th minute with what proved to be the game-winning goal off of an assist from Miki Ness.

Ocosta struck first with a goal from Natalie Carloza in the 28th minute that gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Winlock (1-7-2, 0-4) answered quickly, tying the game at a goal apiece three minutes later.

Ocosta head coach Mike King said he’s been impressed with how his team has gutted out the last few games with only 11 players available.

“Our passing and communication continue to improve, we just have to keep working on our finishing,” he said. “The team is doing very well playing without rest. I’ve been satisfied with the effort and attitude.”

BOYS PREP GOLF

WF West 212, Aberdeen 238

Aberdeen had three players shoot 50 or below, but failed to pick up a victory against WF West on Wednesday and Newaukum Valley Golf Course in Chehalis.

Nolan King shot a 42 over his 9-hole round, followed by Evan Waara (43) and Gavin Timmons (51). Aberdeen’s Trevon Nichols was close behind his teammates with a 51, a 12 stroke improvement from his season average.

WF West’s Connor Trodahl earned the medalist of the match with a 40 on a sunny, yet chilly parr-33 West course.

Aberdeen takes on Centralia in its last league match of the season at 3:30 p.m. on Monday at Grays Harbor Country Club.
