Monday Roundup: Raymond gets complete-team effort in beating North Beach

At this point of the season, teams in the Pacific League are well aware of just how good the Raymond Seagulls can be when star sophomore Kyra Gardner is on her game.

On Monday against North Beach, they found out how good Raymond is when Gardner gets help.

The Seagulls had four players score in double figures and tallied 53 points in the first half en route to a 79-25 blowout over the Hyaks on Monday at Raymond High School.

Raymond (14-1 overall, 12-1 Pacific 2B) scored 32 points in a dominant first quarter, led by Izzy Silvernail and Gardner, who scored 16 and 11 points in the frame, respectively.

A 21-point second quarter, led by Kyndal Koski’s seven points, saw the Seagulls stretch its lead to 53-10 led by halftime.

“It was a great, focused first quarter by our first seven kids in our rotation,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “(And we had) great contributions in the last three quarters by all players. Everyone contributed and got a really good court experience.”

Silvernail led Raymond with 16 points followed by Gardner (15 points), Hannah Miller (10 pts.), and Grace Busenius (10 pts.).

Raymond shot 45% from the field and grabbed 44 rebounds, led by Sidney Swogger’s eight boards.

The Seagulls also held an 18-2 advantage in steals against the Hyaks (2-13, 2-11).

With the win, Raymond keeps pace with Ilwaco for first place in the Pacific League. The Seagulls are a half-game behind the Fishermen in the loss column with five league games left on the schedule.

Aberdeen’s Aliyah Tageant had a double-double but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats fell to Tenino 58-39 in a non-league home game on Monday.

Tageant scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a game where Aberdeen (4-10, 0-4 Evergreen 2A) fell behind 16-6 after the first quarter and by as much as 19 points in the third quarter.

Annetthe Orona also scored in double figures for Aberdeen, totalling 12 points in the contest.

Megan Letts and Ashley Schow led all scorers with 18 points apiece for the Beavers (5-7, 1-1 Evergreen 1A).

With the loss, Aberdeen’s losing streak extended to five games. The Bobcats’ last victory was over Hoquiam on Jan. 3.

Aberdeen wins team title at River Ridge Rumble

A total of 14 Aberdeen wrestlers placed in the top three of their respective weight classes as the Bobcats won the team title at the River Ridge Rumble on Saturday in Napavine.

Four Aberdeen grapplers won individual gold medals on Saturday.

Madelynn Machowek beat her Bobcat teammate, Alli Scott, by a 5-0 decision to claim the 110-pound class.

Hailey Wilson pinned WF West’s Tasha Dugger at 4:24 to win the 125-pound weight division.

Lilly Herr defeated Toledo’s Andrea Jones by pinfall at 2:40 to win the 135-pound class and Katie Gaskin won Aberdeen’s fourth individual title by pinning Centralia’s Anna Lapierre in the 170-pound division.

Rhianne Cline (100 pounds), Madison Neely (105 lbs.), Ciera Skelly (140 lbs.) and Justice Valenzuela (235 lbs.) placed second in their respective weight classes on Saturday.

Third-place finishers for Aberdeen included Austin Wakefield (100 lbs.), Lillian Allen (135 lbs.), and Maray Zepeda (155 lbs.).
