Sheriff’s office investigating death of woman after struggle with police

Manner, cause of death for 35-year old Sarah Palmer of Hoquiam still pending

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation into the Nov. 21 death of a woman who had just had an altercation with Hoquiam Police officers.

“We will provide (Hoquiam Police) Chief Myers with updates on the status of the investigation as it progresses,” said Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate. He added that the release of information in the investigation is normally left to the affected agency, “unless they desire for us to handle that as well.”

The incident occurred shortly before noon Monday after Hoquiam Police were called to a home on the 300 block of N Street that housed patients with a history of chronic mental illness to investigate a physical altercation between two female residents. While one woman was being treated for injuries sustained in the fight, 35-year old Sarah Palmer of Hoquiam “suddenly became very combative” with the two officers. During the ensuing struggle a Taser was deployed and Palmer was handcuffed, shortly after which she suddenly became unresponsive and medics were called to assist her. She was transported to Grays Harbor Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed by Grays Harbor County Coroner Lane Youmans Wednesday; he reported later that day “The cause and manner of death are pending toxicology and further analysis.”
