Gulls 53, Eagles 44

ELMA — Kason Koski poured through 30 points as Raymond came from behind in the second half to upend Elma in a non-league game Tuesday night at Elma.

The Seagulls (2-0) trailed 26-19 at the half, but flipped the script by outscoring the Eagles 22-9 in the third quarter.

“I thought we came out with a much better tempo and much better pace, both offensively and defensively,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said. “I think that led to our success in the third.”

The Eagles (1-3) trailed by only four with less than two minutes remaining, but Koski’s 3-point basket off an inbound play essentially sealed the victory.

“We were in command in the first half, but for some reason they decided to play two halves and we let it get away from us,” Elma coach Marvin Prince said. “We had no energy. We started standing around and gave up 22 points in the third stanza and that was the difference in the game.”

Koski hit 12-of-21 field-goal attempts and swiped four steals. He was also cited by Rask for his floor leadership.

Luke Hamilton pulled down 11 rebounds for Raymond.

Avery Brown scored 18 points and Trace Thompson 13 for the Eagles. Cody Vollan led Elma rebounders with 11.

Raymond opens Pacific League play at Life Christian on Thursday. Elma entertains La Center in a non-leaguer Friday.

MONTESANO — First-half pressure, plus a boost from the bench, allowed Montesano to take control of this non-league contest with Rochester on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs rolled out to a 12-2 first-quarter score on the strength of their defense. Off the bench, freshman Sam Winter led all scorers with 13 points. Tanner Nicklas, Seth Dierkop and Nick Chapman each pulled down eight rebounds.

“I was pleased with the way the kids came out,” Montesano head coach Doug Galloway said. “They played with a lot of passion. Our pressure hurt them and we were able to convert the chances at the other end.”

Galloway cited Winter and Shaydon Farmer for their work off the bench.

On Thursday, Montesano (2-1) hits the road to take on Castle Rock.

Hyaks 50, Vikings 34

OYEHUT — North Beach jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back to defeat Willapa Valley in a Pacific 2B League contest at the House of Pain on Tuesday.

North Beach (2-1, 3-1) was led by a strong all-around game by Hannah Avery. The senior finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Reilly Moore led the Hyaks in scoring with 14 points, while Helen Garman grabbed 17 rebounds.

“We jumped out and had an 8-0 lead and it kind of stayed in that range most of the game,” North Beach coach Larry Moore said. “They made a couple runs, but we kept our composure and made our free throws at the end. We got back and played some real good half-court defense and did a good job of taking care of the ball.”

Moore also cited freshman Lorin Cox for her defensive play. Cox came off the bench to add six points.

The Vikings (0-2, 1-2) were led by 10 points from Hannah Cook.

North Beach hosts Raymond on Saturday, while Valley hosts Ilwaco on Friday.

LACEY — Erika Snider scored 21 points as Ocosta beat Northwest Christian in a Pacific League game Tuesday at Lacey.

Snider took advantage of some perimeter shooting opportunities for her game-high total.

Kristi Raffelson scored 18 points and pulled down 22 rebounds for the Wildcats (2-1, 3-1). Kaylee Barnum, who hit four 3-point baskets, also scored 18. Ocosta was credited with 52 percent field-goal shooting.

The Wildcats took a 49-34 lead into the fourth quarter and key 3-pointers from Barnum and Snider helped thwart a Navigator comeback.

“That was just momentum breakers for them,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum said.

The Wildcats host South Bend on Friday.

PUYALLUP — A turnover-laden end to the first half put Hoquiam down for good against Cascade Christian in a non-league game on Tuesday.

Hoquiam (0-3) trailed by six points with a minute left to go in the first half, but the Grizzlies turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions. The Cougars converted the turnovers into seven points and jumped ahead for good.

Cascade Christian’s Allison Downs hit seven 3-pointers to score a game-high 24 points.

“From then on it was just too many turnovers and they had a lot of easy points,” Hoquiam coach Mark Maxfield said. “We played one good half and the second half was not good. We did a poor job of finding Downs and we got beat on the boards pretty badly.”

Maxfield cited Karlie Krohn, who led the Grizzlies with 12 points, for her shooting and Casey Mode, who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, for her effort.

Hoquiam hosts Aberdeen on Thursday.

FORKS — A 20-0 second quarter in favor of Forks allowed the hosts to pressure Lake Quinault into a non-league loss on Tuesday evening.

Katlynn Neeland led the Elks (1-1) with 11 points, nine rebounds and eight steals. Elizabeth Guadarrama also pulled down six rebounds.

“Forks was a better team with more height,” Quinault head coach Chris Christiansen said. “They pressured us and we fell apart at the seams. We’re a young team. We just weren’t ready for their pressure.”

On Friday, Lake Quinault travels to Crescent.

BOYS SWIMMING

Blazers 119, Bobcats 64

LACEY — Aberdeen’s Robby Lewis won two individual events and the Bobcats won four events, including a relay, overall in a non-league dual meet loss to Timberline on Tuesday afternoon.

Lewis, a senior and a three-time state meet participant, qualified for the District IV 2A meet in the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly for Aberdeen. Junior Jared Durr won the 500 free and the Bobcats 200 freestyle relay — Sage Bridges, Durr, Connor Gates, Lewis — came away with a win.

“Many of the boys had time drops and their efforts in practice are clearly paying off,” AHS head coach Angie Durr said. “I was very impressed with the performance of both of the freestyle and the medley relays.”

Coach Durr cited Bridges and Trevor Mullin for their overall performances. Freshman Jordan Rounsivill qualified for the district meet in the 100 backstroke.

On Saturday, Aberdeen hits the road again, this time to the Mark Morris Pentathlon.
