Benny Ray West, 78, a resident of Westport and former driver for Far West Transport in Aberdeen, died Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at his home in Westport.
Benny was born on March 4, 1942 in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Curtis A. and Ellen E. (Coleman) West. At the age of 13, a twister demolished the foundry where his father worked, so they moved to Tacoma. He attended Stadium High School.
On July 25, 1959, Benny married Nancy Nulf. They had four children.
In 1971, he moved to Bremerton and worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard working in the foundry. He moved to Aberdeen in the early ‘80s and started Ben’s Taxi in 1982. In 1998, he went to work for his daughter’s company, Far West Transportation for the next 13 years.
Ben loved camping, going to the beach and being with family and the grandkids. He enjoyed watching baseball and the Seahawks.
Ben is survived by his sons: Stephen (Tammy) West of Poulsbo and Randy (Mary) West of Tahuya; daughters: Debbie (Dylan) Alfano of Aberdeen and Sue West of Westport; brothers: Jerry (Shirley) West of Tacoma, Mack (Jackie) West of Lakewood and Charles West of Blackwell, Oklahoma; sisters: Gayla (Tim) McGraw of Tacoma Sue (Dan) Dumdie of Port Angeles and Kay Gregory of Tennessee; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Gibson.
There will be a private family gathering for Ben.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, WA.
