Pacific 2B League

Ocosta

Coach: Jason Quinby (fifth year, all at Ocosta)

Returning Letterwinners: Dereck Thomas 5-11 Sr (All League HM) guard/forward; Drake Mitby 6-1 Sr guard/forward; Zach Allton 5-8 Jr (All League 2nd Team) guard; Alex Bailey 5-5 Soph guard; Kobe Beck 5-9 Soph guard; Paul Bjornsgard 6-0 Soph forward.

Promising Newcomers: Hunter Hatton 5-11 Jr forward; Kaden Smith 6-5 Jr center; Joe Wardlow 6’3” Jr center; Cole Hatton 5-9 Fr guard; Jose Sevilla 5-4 Fr guard; Evan Waara 5-11 Fr guard/forward.

Coach’s comments: With more than two-thirds of our kids being underclassmen, this has been one of the more fun and challenging group of kids for me to work with. On one hand, they are young and full of energy and can do things that make you get very excited about their potential. On the other hand, because of their youth, sometimes we lose focus during a drill and do something out of character for our team. I believe that as the season progresses, we will make huge strides as a team, particularly on defense. Excluding Life Christian, our league is deeper and more wide open than it has been in awhile. Including us, there are probably five or six teams with a realistic chance at the No. 2 seed from our league. This should make for very competitive games each and every night.

League favorites: Life Christian

Coach’s Comments: The boys have been working really hard. The attitude has been great. We have excellent senior leadership. We are ready to see what the 2016-17 season has in store for the Hyaks.

Coach’s Comments: We are entering the season as a very young and inexperience varsity basketball team. Walker Oblad is our only returning varsity letterman who has had considerable amount of varsity level play from last season. However, that lack of inexperience may be in return one of our strengths of the season as we have a vast potential for growth throughout the season. Every game we paly will be crucial for us has too gain that much needed experience. However young we are, we have a great group of kids that have the basketball savvy instilled in them. It will be crucial for us to make teams earn every basket, block out and win the 50/50 hustle battle. It will be an exciting and interesting year to watch these young athletes develop into players. Hopefully with the experience gained from the beginning of the season and our goal of getting better each week that we will become that competitive team by the end of the season.

League Favorites: Life Christian Academy.

Coastal 1B League

Taholah

Coach: Mike Rose (Second year as boys varsity head coach; former Taholah girls varsity head coach).

Promising Newcomers: Dawson Bastian, 5-11 senior forward; Michael Valenzuela-Pierce, 5-11 senior forward.

Coach’s Comments: Last year, we went undefeated in league, won district, won our regional game against Evergreen Lutheran and lost at state to eventual State champions Neah Bay by seven points. With basically the same team back from last year and with a lot of senior leadership, we hope to improve on that record.

League favorites: Naselle, Oakville.

Coach’s Comments: I was happy to see 12 kids I can depend on turn out this year. We are a very young team, but should improve as the season goes along. It is exciting for me as a first-year coach to have these players and truly believe we will be a team to contend with in the next few years. Our seniors will provide great leadership for this team.

League Favorites: Naselle and Taholah.
