Tuesday boys basketball roundup: Grizzlies beat Rockets; Bobcats notch first win

Grizzlies 63, Rockets 52

Dry from the perimeter, Hoquiam got its offensive flow going in the paint and passing around the key to dominate Castle Rock in this non-league contest at Hoquiam Square Garden on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies, who were 0-for-12 from behind the 3-point arc, led by as many as 22 in the second half and held a 17-point lead through most of it before emptying the bench in the final two minutes of the contest.

Jace Varner led all scorers with 23 points and 14 rebounds for Hoquiam (3-2 overall), with Jack Adams II adding 11 and Victor James 10 points.

“The score doesn’t indicate it, but we were in control throughout,” HHS head coach Curtis Eccles said. “Jace had a very good game, shot the ball well inside. Collectively, we didn’t shoot well. We missed a lot of easy shots. It was similar to the Black Hills game, except we went 0-for-4 from behind the 3-point line, not 1-for-13. They adjusted at halftime and they’re learning.”

On Friday, Hoquiam will stay home to greet Class 2A Tumwater.

Bobcats 56, Spartans 50

Aberdeen’s press defense and some clutch 3-point shooting helped the Bobcats defeat Forks in a non-league game at Sam Benn Gym on Tuesday.

With the Bobcats trailing by seven after one quarter, Aberdeen (1-4) employed a man-to-man, full-court press in the second quarter and took control of the contest. The Bobcats forced turnovers from the Spartans and turned those turnovers into points on the other end. Aberdeen point guard Ben Dublanko hit three 3-pointers and put up 13 points of his game-high 22 points in the second quarter as the Bobcats racked up 24 points to take a 7-point lead into halftime and never look back.

“It was a very slow-paced game in the first quarter, but in the second quarter we put on some man-to-man, full-court pressure and forced them into some turnovers and got some easy buckets,” Aberdeen coach Mark Buckman said. “We bothered them with our pressure in the third quarter and kept making our shots.”
