Fourth-quarter comebacks made the scheduling of a three-school co-ed doubleheader worthwhile for Aberdeen’s basketball teams.

Reagan Glanz sparked a rally from eight points down as the Bobcats nipped Vashon Island, 33-32, in the girls half of the varsity twin bill Saturday at Sam Benn Gym.

Aberdeen’s boys overcame a five-point deficit in the final four minutes to top Bethel, 70-63.

Bobcats 70, Braves 63

Three players scored in double figures as Aberdeen prevailed in a fast-paced, entertaining boys contest.

In his second game after recovering from a dislocated shoulder, senior post Braden Castleberry-Taylor turned in yeoman service in the paint with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Senior wing Victor Gomez, whose output included a quartet of deep 3-pointers, added 19 points and nine boards. Senior guard Josh Collett snapped a recent shooting slump with 15 points.

Although leading most of the way, the Bobcats (2-4) found themselves in a 59-54 hole when the hot-shooting Class 3A Braves from the Spanaway area reeled off seven successive points midway through the fourth quarter.

Then came the game’s critical sequence. Castleberry-Taylor scored on a drive and drew a foul. Aberdeen’s Harlan Troy rebounded the ensuing missed free throw and dished back to Gomez, who drained a three from the right wing to tie it.

Collett’s two foul shots at the 2:49 mark put the Cats in front to stay at 61-59. Castleberry-Taylor and Collett had buckets and Castleberry-Taylor, Collett and Ben Dublanko added free throws down the stretch to maintain the lead.

Although Aberdeen coach Mark Buckman still wasn’t entirely satisfied with his club’s defensive performance against a winless opponent, he termed the overall effort the best of the season. The Bobcats shot 50 percent from the field and committed only 12 turnovers — eight fewer than Bethel.

“We were patient in our zone offense and, in our man sets, we executed when we needed to,” Buckman said. “We took care of the ball.”

Gomez also handed out four assists. The Bobcats received key reserve contributions from Troy (six rebounds) and Alonzo Coburn (three steals).

Santiago Paz, who hit a succession of difficult long-distance shots to keep Bethel in the running, topped all scorers with 23 points.

GIRLS

Bobcats 33, Pirates 32

Aberdeen’s girls (4-1) largely spun their wheels for more than three quarters of a game in which neither team surpassed the 20 percent mark in field-goal shooting.

Vashon Island led 21-12 on Berline Kilpatrick’s 3-point shot with 6:28 remaining in the third quarter. The Pirates (1-4) went nearly 10 minutes before their next field goal, but were still up 28-20 with 4:25 left in the final period.

The Bobcats, however, limited Vashon Island to a single free throw until the waning seconds while Glanz started attacking the basket.

The 5-foot-7 junior converted a drive to pull the Cats to within two (29-27) with 1:41 on the clock. Her conventional three-point play at 0:53 gave Aberdeen its first lead since midway through the second quarter.

Dani Buckman netted two foul shots at 0:28 and Kyra Gallinger made one of two from the line 17 seconds later.

Gallinger’s free throw proved decisive, as Kilpatrick bombed in a three with three seconds remaining. The Bobcats, however, weren’t even required to inbound the ball before time expired.

“I told them we had another gear…and we finally found it,” a relieved AHS coach Jeff Niemi said. “Our intensity picked up. We forced a turnover or two, pressured them and finally hit a couple of shots.”

Glanz scored eight of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter. Senior Jillian Swor scored Aberdeen’s first eight points and, oddly, none thereafter.

Swor did lead Aberdeen rebounders with seven, one more than Glanz.

Kilpatrick and Chloe Kuyper (the latter fouling out with 2:14 remaining) shared Vashon Island scoring honors with 10 points each.

Both Aberdeen teams will next face Montesano. The Bobcat girls host the Bulldogs on Tuesday. Aberdeen’s boys travel to Monte on Wednesday.
