The Ocosta High School girls soccer team lost a hard-fought match 2-1 on Wednesday to the Adna Pirates in Adna.
Adna scored on a shot in the third minute after a low shot skipped along a wet turf past Ocosta keeper Devyn Martin.
Adna doubled its lead in the 11th minute when Ocosta committed an own goal.
Later in the first half, the Wildcats (1-1 overall, 0-1 league) cut the lead in half when Miki Ness fed a thru pass to Kylee Denny who then rifled a shot under the crossbar from 25 yards away to make it a 2-1 game.
Ocosta appeared to have scored the tying goal in the 70th minute, but the Wildcats were called for kicking the ball while the Adna goalie had a hand on the ball, nullifying the goal.
Martin recorded 11 saves in the loss, including stopping three breakaway attempts and blocking a rebound shot after initially making a diving save.
“We picked it up after getting down by two to a really good Adna team,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “The girls fought hard for every 50-50 ball and never gave up. They showed they can overcome adversity. This game will help us get better as the season progresses.”
Ocosta travels to Montesano on Monday for a game against the Bulldog JV team at noon.

WF West 1, Aberdeen 0
The Aberdeen girls soccer team lost its season opener 1-0 against WF West on Tuesday in Chehalis.
In a game mostly defined by play between the two 18-yard boxes, the Bearcats scored in the first half on a shot from distance for the only goal of the game.
Aberdeen (0-2) was able to gain more possession in the second half, but was unable to put any shots into the net in a game where temperatures dropped to 25 degrees.
“It was a very good game defensively for our girls,” Bobcats head coach Larry Fleming said. “It took a few minutes to get going but considering the field conditions, the weather, and the abbreviated preseason, I think our team played a very strong game overall.”
Fleming noted Madi Gore, Aili Scott, Logan Glanz, Emma Green and Elizabeth Martinez as having strong games for Aberdeen.
The Bobcats face Rochester at 6 p.m. on Friday at Stewart Field.
The Aberdeen JV team lost 4-0 to Adna JV on Tuesday.

Raymond-South Bend 3, Napavine 1
Raymond-South Bend girls soccer rallied to overcome a one-goal deficit to earn a 3-1 season-opening victory over the Napavine Tigers on Tuesday in South Bend.
Napavine’s Natalya Marcial opened the scoring with a goal in the 13th minute to put the Ravens down by a goal.
But RSB striker Ana Quintana was not going to let the Tigers ruin her Senior Night. Quintana scored on a break to tie the game at 1-1 in the first half and then gave the Ravens a 2-1 lead by scoring on a ricocheted shot.
Ravens midfielder Kiana Bale scored on a penalty kick in the second half to give RSB an insurance goal.

Centralia 54, Aberdeen 53
Aberdeen lost Wednesday’s boys tennis match 54-53 against Centralia.
Though mid-winter is not the typical time for the boys prep tennis season, Bobcats head coach Dave Bruncke said his team was happy to get the opportunity to play.
“During a COVID tennis season in early February, we were very pleased to be able to get in a match,” Bruncke said. “These boys were used to playing in the heat of August and September and are getting used to the temperatures being 30-40 degrees cooler.”
Aberdeen will host Black Hills at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, weather permitting.
