GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bulldogs 50, Vikings 40

LYNDEN — A little sharpshooting and a defensive switch helped Montesano take down Bellevue Christian during the Lynden Cloud Nine Christmas Classic on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (8-1) stumbled out of the gate, committing seven turnovers in the first quarter, but pulled it together in the second quarter as senior Josie Toyra hit three 3-pointers. The spark carried through the rest of the game. In the fourth quarter, Bellevue Christian closed to within four points, but Toyra, Shayla Floch and Cheyann Bartlett each hit 3-pointers to push the Bulldogs to victory.

“The first quarter was a little sloppy,” Monte coach Julie Graves said. “We had seven turnovers to go with seven points and we gave up seven offensive rebounds. In the second quarter, Josie Toyra hit three 3-pointers and that got us going. In the second half, we mixed up our defense and only gave up three offensive rebounds. We cut down our turnovers and did a better job of blocking out.”

Montesano was led by 17 points and 15 rebounds from Jordan Spradlin, while Toyra finished with 12 points. Floch and Talley each added three assists, while Graves cited Lexi Lovell for her play off the bench.

Montesano will face host Class 2A Lynden tomorrow during the final day of the Cloud Nine Classic.

MENLO — Willapa Valley jumped out to an early lead and ran away from Pe Ell in the first round of the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic on Tuesday.

The Vikings (3-6) played ungracious hosts, grabbing a 5-point lead after one quarter, and a defensive switch helped Willapa Valley hold the Trojans to just two points in the third quarter.

“We did a good job on the boards and limited their possession time,” Valley coach Colby Rogers said. “They were having some success against our man defense, so we went into a zone in the second half and that helped.”

Brooke Friese led the Vikings with 16 points, while Hannah Cook added 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Madison Huber scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
