The Aberdeen girls soccer team broke a long losing streak to Black Hills, and Bobcats golfer Nolan King carded a spectacular score in a win over Rochester in Tuesday’s prep sports action around the Twin Harbors.

GIRLS SOCCER

Aberdeen 3, Black Hills 2 (AHS 4-3 penalty kicks)

Aberdeen converted four of its five penalty kicks to defeat Black Hills for the first time in four seasons, 3-2, on Tuesday at Black Hills High School.

Aberdeen (3-2 overall) broke the scoreless tie when senior midfielder Emma Green followed her own blocked penalty kick to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

After the Wolves scored off a corner kick in the 32nd minute, Aberdeen senior midfielder Elizabeth Martinez sent a through pass to Michelle Lang, who beat her defender and slotted a shot past the Black Hills keeper for a 2-1 lead in the 34th minute.

Black Hills tied the game in the 66th minute and — after two scoreless overtime periods — the game went to a penalty-kick shootout.

Aberdeen’s Char Gutierrez, Aman Cheema, Annie Troeh and Brooklyn Lecomte converted their penalty-kick attempts, while Black Hills had two of its five attempts miss the mark, giving the Bobcats their third-straight victory and first win over Black Hills in four years.

“The girls are working hard every day to improve and it showed in tonight’s performance,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “And we got a crucial league win on the road.”

Fleming cited that Annie and Zoe Troeh played well at forward and midfield, respectively, and Madi Gore, Aili Scott and Logan Glanz had strong games on defense.

Aberdeen JV won 4-2 over Black Hills JV, with Madi Marlow recording a hat trick and Britt Rajcich scoring a goal in the win.

Montesano 7, Elma 1

Montesano forward Jaiden Morrison scored four goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 7-1 victory over Elma on Tuesday in Elma.

The Bulldogs (3-1 overall) led 2-0 at halftime after first-half goals from midfielder Brooke Streeter and Morrison.

A little over five minutes into the second half, Morrison scored again to make it a 3-0 game.

Vanna Prom scored for Monte in the 55th minute, followed by Morrison’s third of the game just under a minute later.

Morrison scored her fourth of the game in the 61st minute, giving Monte a 6-0 advantage.

After an Elma goal made it 6-1 in the 74th minute, Monte’s Reghann Fairbairn scored a minute later to push the final score to 7-1.

Monte out shot Elma 27-6, with 17 Bulldog shots on goal.

Elma moves to 0-4 on the season with the loss.

Tenino 6, Hoquiam 1

Hoquiam struggled in the second-half against arguably the 1A section’s best team, falling 7-1 to Tenino on Tuesday in Hoquiam.

Tenino scored goals in the 21st and 31st minutes to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Hoquiam’s first-half performance impressed its head coach, Drew Grannemann.

“We held our own the first 20 minutes and competed really hard against a quality opponent,” he said.

After halftime, Tenino took a 3-0 lead in the 42nd minute before Hoquiam broke the shutout with a goal of its own.

Hoquiam’s Emily Elders sent a shot toward the Beavers’ goal off a direct free kick from approximately 30 yards out. The Tenino goal keeper mishandled the ball, allowing Hoquiam’s Alyssa Perry to score off the rebound to make it a 3-1 game.

But Tenino’s offense continued to apply pressure, scoring goals in the 56th, 60th and 62nd minutes to secure the victory.

“Overall, I’m just proud of the effort put forward tonight from our squad,” Grannemann said. “The result didn’t go our way but we never gave up and kept working hard.”

BOYS GOLF

Aberdeen 223, Rochester 278

Aberdeen had five players shoot sub-50 rounds en route to a 223-278 victory over Rochester on Tuesday at Grays Harbor Country Club.

Nolan King won medalist honors with a 9-hole round of 37.

Four other Aberdeen golfers broke 50, including Charlie Ancich (42), Baylor Ainsworth (47), Trevon Nichols (48) and Logan Seguin (49).

After the match was postponed a day due to rainy weather and soggy course conditions, Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said his team was “excited to get out and finally play a match.”

Sundstrom also commended King’s round.

“Nolan played an outstanding round of golf for any conditions,” he said. “He has been working very hard on this game to prepare for his senior year. His driving was slightly off the fairways today, but his scrambling ability gave him scoring chances.”
