TENINO — Hoquiam drained 58 percent of its shots from the field overall and kept the pressure on host Tenino in the first half en route to an Evergreen 1A League-opening win on Tuesday night.

“As a team, we shot the ball really well,” HHS head coach Curtis Eccles said. “We shot the ball well, mostly on transition baskets. And, we only had nine turnovers overall. Our reserves played the entire second half and they played well.”

The Gulls hit 7-for-13 from behind the 3-point arc and limited the Warriors from behind the arc as well to take over this game. Raymond outrebounded Chief Leschi, 37-24, but committed 26 turnovers.
“It was not a pretty game for us, but we battled through it,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “It is nice to just get a win on the road and move on.”

TENINO — A tough night shooting for Hoquiam led to a scoreless first quarter, which proved to be the difference in an Evergreen 1A League-opening loss to Tenino on Tuesday.
Down 6-0 after the first quarter, Hoquiam (0-1, 4-7) got close at 11-7 at halftime and a 28-28 tie in the fourth quarter. However, Tenino’s Olivia Bailon hit two consecutive 3-point baskets to push the hosts into the lead for good.
“They hit five threes on the night, which turned out to be the difference,” HHS head coach Mark Maxfield said. “Bailon hit two of them when we were tied in the fourth. Our shooting woes continue. We’re getting good shots, running the offense well and getting clean shots. We just can’t hit any.”
Sophomore Rylee Vonhof led all scorers with a double-double — 15 points and 14 rebounds — for the Grizzlies. Bailon led the Beavers with nine points.
On Friday, Hoquiam hosts Elma.

Down 15-8 after a cold-shooting first half, Lake Quinault rallied to take the lead early in the fourth quarter. But the Owls had too much depth for the Elks (1-2, 3-4), who had five players available.
“I think Mary M. Knight has a little more experience than we do and they were able to pull through,” Quinault coach Chris Christiansen said.
Bree Obi topped the Elks with 14 points and six rebounds. Kaitlynn Neeland had nine steals and eight rebounds for Quinault.
