The Montesano Bulldogs basketball team is back on top of the 1A Evergreen League after clinching a league championship with a 45-36 victory over Tenino on Thursday in Tenino.
Monte (9-2 overall, 7-1 1A Evergreen) clinched the league crown by downing the Beavers (8-3, 6-2) for the second time in three games this season.
The Bulldogs defense, which wreaked havoc on Tenino in a Monte win back on May 18, did it again on Thursday. Monte allowed just 13 points in the first half and led by 12 at the half.
Paige Lisherness scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for a double-double to lead the Bulldogs. The junior forward also had six steals in the game.
Zoee Lisherness had a great all-around floor game for Monte with six points, eight rebounds, four steals and four assists.
“We kind of got it going in the second quarter and defensively did a nice job on them,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said after clinching his first league title as Bulldogs head coach. “It was a really great team effort tonight.”
Monte led by as many as 18 points at one point in the second half.
Tenino’s Ashley Schow led all scorers with 17 points.
The win is the ninth in the last 10 games for Montesano.

Willapa Valley 43, Three Rivers Christian 22
Cami Swartz had 22 points as Willapa Valley defeated Three Rivers Christian 43-22 on Thursday in Longview.
The Vikings (8-3 overall, 8-1 1B Columbia Valley) opened up a 15 point lead at halftime by outscoring Three Rivers 16-4 in the second quarter.
Swartz led the way in the second, scoring 11 points in the quarter to stake Willapa Valley to the sizable lead.
Hannah Hamilton also drew praise from the Vikings coaching staff after pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds.
“She was absolutely great tonight,” Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson said. “She plays physical and goes after the ball. … She’s a beast.”
Willapa Valley freshman Lauryn Emery and Hadlee Russell scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds, respectively.

Forks 79, Raymond 34
A lackluster performance led to a big loss as Raymond fell to Forks 79-34 on Thursday in Forks.
The Seagulls (1-7 overall, 2B Pacific League) scored just 24 points through the first three quarters, which drew criticism from their head coach Derek Rask.
“Our performance this evening was disappointing,” Rask said. “We weren’t ready to play after a long road trip. Forks is a big, physical team and we simply didn’t put out the effort as a team needed to compete with them.”
Rask did note that two of his players — Jaxson Freeman and Joseph Villalpando — played with effort and “a lot of heart” on the evening.

Tumwater 1677, Aberdeen 1536
Aberdeen lost to Tumwater 1,677-1,536 on Thursday in Tumwater.
Aberdeen’s score of 1,536 total pins was its highest of the season, led by Karie Turner, who bowled a 173 in her first varsity match.
After switching to a heavier ball, Bailee Taylor had the high series for Aberdeen with a 395 over her three games.
Aberdeen’s Cameryn Micheau bowled her second turkey of the year on Thursday.

BOYS PREP SWIMMING
Aberdeen 75, Shelton 75, Hoquiam 15
Aberdeen and Hoquiam’s boys swimming teams wrapped up their dual meet season at home against Evergreen 2A foe Shelton on Thursday afternoon.
Once all of the teams were done, the Bobcats and the Highclimbers were unable to separate from each other. All told, Aberdeen and Shelton came away with a 75-75 draw in the three-team dual meet, with Hoquiam finishing with 15 points.
“Both teams were so evenly matched, I guess there was only one outcome today,” AHS-HHS head coach Rob Burns said. “With less than a week from the district meet, this was a key meet for the Bobcats and the Grizzlies. Some swimmers were out-of-position, but most of them were in their spots for districts. So, I’m happy with the effort and the performances.”
Aberdeen’s Russell and Tyler Bates and Hoquiam’s Zach Parker came away with individual wins — Russell Bates in the 50-yard free, Tyler Bates in the 100 backstroke and Parker in the 100 butterfly.
The Bobcats also won two of the three relay races — the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
Aberdeen honored its lone senior during the meet — Noah Johnson — and he was cited by Burns for his strong efforts today and his dedication and drive in his four years in the program.
