Vitamin C is one of nature’s best-known antioxidants. As WebMD explains, the antioxidants in vitamin C may help defend against the damage caused by UV light. You can’t use a vitamin C serum in place of sunscreen. However, studies suggest vitamin C could blunt some of the damage caused by UV light (i.e., photodamage).
According to Oregon State University, you can apply vitamin C topically (directly to your skin) or take it as a food or supplement. When applied topically, your body struggles to absorb vitamin C because of the stratum corneum, the protective layer of your skin that prevents substances from being absorbed through your skin. This causes your skin to become drier and rougher.
You can find animal and plant-based sources of squalene. You can find squalene in oat bran, olives, sugarcane, and shark liver, for example. However, animal and plant-based squalene is unstable for use in skincare products. It gets rancid and spoils quickly when exposed to oxygen.
That’s why skincare companies use squalane (with an ‘A’). By hydrogenating squalene, skincare companies create squalane. Hydrogenation is the process of converting squalene from an unsaturated oil into a saturated oil, creating squalane. Imarais Beauty has created a proprietary version of squalane called Vegan Squalane. Studies show that regular use of squalane (when applied topically) can boost collagen production and give you firmer skin. Other studies have linked squalane to better skin health. However, few studies have examined the oral use of squalane. It’s unclear if eating squalane – as is the case with the Imarais Beauty Glow gummies – can provide similar benefits.
