A child died at the scene of a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 101 North of Queets on Monday.

The Washington State Patrol said a 2003 Toyota Rav4 was heading north on 101 just after 1 p.m. Monday. The driver suffered a medical event and lost consciousness.

The vehicle drifted over the right shoulder and into an irrigation ditch before striking two pedestrians, a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl, both from Queets, that were standing in a grassy area near a pullout.

The 10-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The 12-year-old girl was transported to Harbor Regional Health Community Hospital in Aberdeen before being airlifted to Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma. Her condition is unknown.

The 67-year-old Lake Stevens woman who was driving the Toyota was not injured. She was transported, as a precaution to Community Hospital in Aberdeen.

The accident report states that drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the collision, and that charges could be pending based on the outcome of the investigation. Traffic through the remote area was backed up for about six hours while the accident scene was documented.
