After the stage being dark for over a year, Sunday Afternoon Live has announced its 18th season of presenting a wide variety of musical shows.
The season’s first performance is set for Aug. 29, featuring the vocals and guitar of “Sundae and Mr. Goessl.”
The duo is known for its “countrified jazz, melding the likability of Americana, pop and country music and giving it a hybrid of jazz rhythms that will illuminate any music lovers hankering,” says Bea Willis writing for 5 Finger Review.
“Putting live performances in a local venue became a challenge for the Sunday Afternoon Live board members when the historic Raymond Theatre had to be ruled out, for the time being, due to Covid precautions,” said Virginia Carlson, SAL’s board chairman.
“We have enjoyed the Raymond Theatre and are hopeful we will be returning (to that venue). Meanwhile, we are pleased and grateful to the folks at New Life Fellowship for opening their doors to our artists and patrons.”
Tray Dahl and the Jugtime Ragband will perform Oct. 3 with a mix of Dixieland tunes, big band music and old-time harmonies.
The Nov. 14 show will feature Greg Cahill’s four-piece band with a blend of music that garnered Grammy nominations in 2012 and 2019.
The Okaidja Afroso Trio is scheduled to perform Jan. 9, featuring percussion, dancing and vocals of the Portland-based group.
The Feb. 27 production, “Blues is a Woman,” will celebrate the profound influence of women on the evolution of the blues.
CelloBop, originally scheduled for the 2019-20’s SAL season will perform on April 10. Gideon Freudmann is a founding member of the Portland Cello Project and “pursuing his mission to make the cello hip, modern and fun.”
All performances are scheduled for 3 p.m. at the New Life Fellowship Church, 404 Commercial Street in Raymond.
