A home in the 400 block of South Michigan St. in Aberdeen was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning in a blaze that was so hot it damaged the roof of a business across the alley, the Aberdeen Fire Department said. Hoquiam firefighters were called in to help fight the two-alarm fire.

No injuries were reported. The occupant smelled the smoke inside the home and quickly went outside.

The fire’s cause had not been determined as of Sunday afternoon. The initial call came at 1:37 a.m. When firefighters arrived at the single-story, wood-frame house at 411 S. Michigan, heavy fire and smoke was coming from all four sides of the home, said Battalion Chief Damon Lillybridge.

Fire crews took defensive action but a second structure, Harbor Battery, at 409 S. Michigan, sustained fire and heat damage along the roof line of the south wall. The crews were able to extinguish the fire along the roof and eliminate any fire from entering the building’s interior.

Damage in the initial fire was estimated at $115,000. The second home sustained about $5,000 in damage, the department said.

Twelve Aberdeen firefighters, the assistant chief, chief, and two Hoquiam firefighters on one command unit, four engines, two medic units responded to the fire.
