Aberdeen dominated the pace of play and possession, but while Hoquiam’s defense bent, it did not break.
The girls soccer version of the Myrtle Street Rivalry was decided by a single direct free kick as Aberdeen defeated Hoquiam 1-0 on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.
With the Bobcats (1-0 overall) holding a 20-1 shot advantage in the contest, it was sophomore center midfielder Jaylynn Phimmasone’s free kick from 30 yards out in the 48th minute that turned out to be the only goal of the game.
Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming was pleased with his team’s defense and ball movement, but lamented the Bobcats’ inability to finish on its offensive opportunities.
“Our defense and passing were solid and we won the ball aggressively,” he said. “But we were either weak or errant on too many shots.”
Aberdeen’s ineffectiveness to shut the door on the Grizzlies nearly turned catastrophic as Hoquiam was awarded a penalty kick with just four minutes left in the game. But the subsequent shot went over the crossbar, preserving Aberdeen’s 1-0 win.
“Our team played a great first game tonight,” new Hoquiam head coach John Johnson said, citing the play of co-captains Ellie Winkelman and Emma Johnson. “We have some work to do to clean it up a bit but they came out ready to play. Besides a few mistakes I am proud of the way the girls played tonight. We will keep progressing and moving forward.”
Fleming noted the defensive play of Aili Scott, Madi Marlow, Britt Rajcich, Scotlyn Lecomte and Andrea Meraz who helped senior goal keeper and co-captain Char Gutierrez keep a clean sheet.
