A teenage boy ran into a crosswalk at the intersection of First and G streets in Aberdeen late Tuesday and was struck by an Aberdeen Police vehicle driven by a 21-year veteran of the department, according to an Aberdeen Police Department statement.
Shortly after 8 p.m. the officer was travelling westbound on First Street in his marked patrol car when the teenager ran northbound in the crosswalk across First Street. The teenager and his father had been walking north up the sidewalk and began crossing in the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection.
The officer braked hard and steered right but struck the teenager with the driver’s side front quarter panel of the vehicle, which then spun the teenager around and sent him to the ground. According to the Aberdeen Police statement, the young man “jumped back up under his own power, telling the officer he was OK.” The father was not hit by the officer’s vehicle.
As a precaution, the Aberdeen Fire Department was summoned to the scene to check the teenager’s welfare, who was only reporting soreness. The teenager and his father declined transport to Grays Harbor Community Hospital.
At the time of this incident, there were vehicles moving through the area from G Street on both sides of First Street. According to the police statement, it was raining heavily, and windy. The street lights in the area were all activated. The teenager was wearing dark clothing, with light accents around his shoulders and head. His father was wearing neutral to dark clothing.
Aberdeen Police Lieutenant C.J. Chastain, who issued the statement, was unavailable for comment when attempts were made Wednesday to find out if the officer involved would be cited for the incident or disciplined by the department.
