Conan Baxter had himself a game so good on Friday it wasn’t only epic, it was historic.

The Elma running back carried the ball 18 times for a whopping 308 yards and six touchdowns in a 69-26 victory over Seton Catholic on Friday in Vancouver.

Running behind an offensive line of Nathan Comer, Donovan Bishop, Zach Miller, Tanner Thompson, Austin Salazar, Tucker Potts and Brock Maners, Baxter’s 308 yards sets a new school record for rushing yardage in a game, breaking the mark of 263 set by Todd Basler in 2002.

“Credit to (Baxter) and the entire offense,” Elma head coach Ron Clark said of the historic feat. “They really blocked well for him.”

Baxter ran for three rushing touchdowns in each half, scoring on runs of nine, 47 and 28 yards in the first half and on carries of 53, 23 and 18 yards in the second half. His six rushing touchdowns in the game are one off the all-time school record of seven.

Baxter also scored on an interception return to make it a 54-14 game in the third quarter.

Elma (3-1) led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and 35-14 at the half.

The Eagles racked up 514 yards of offense — 431 of those on the ground in 34 attempts.

Sophomore quarterback Carter Studer was 3-for-6 passing for 83 yards, including two throws to running back Jarred Bailey, who scored the game’s first touchdown on a deep 68-yard catch early in the first quarter.

Bailey also ran for 80 yards on 10 carries and a 27-yard touchdown.

Bodem Muller scored on a 12-yard run for Elma to round out the scoring at 69-26 with 1:58 left in the game.

Elma’s defense created three turnovers, the interception by Baxter and two picks from defensive back René Duran.

Aberdeen 28, Centralia 12

Aberdeen remained atop the 2A Evergreen League standings with a 28-12 victory over Centralia on Friday in Centralia.

The Bobcats (4-1, 3-1 2A Evergreen) were led by junior running back Jeremy Sawyer, who carried the ball 23 times for 154 yards and three touchdowns.

Aberdeen opened up a 16-0 lead on two Sawyer TD runs in the first quarter and led 22-6 at the half after a second quarter scoring run of four yards by Bobcats running back Trey Anderson.

Aberdeen rushed for 264 of the teams 269 yards of total offense while the Bobcats defense held Centralia (0-6, 0-4) to 191 yards of total offense.

Jakob Bowers had nine carries for 61 yards with Anderson rushing for 37 yards on six carries.

“Jeremy and Trey had some really nice runs,” Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge said of the performance of his backfield while complimenting Centralia. “(The Tigers) are probably the best 0-6 team in the state. … They are big up front and had some long drives that chewed up some clock so our offense wasn’t on the field. … That they haven’t won a game yet I think is a testament to the strength of our league.”

The win gives Aberdeen a 3-1 league record and has the Bobcats situated in first place two-thirds of the way through the regular season.

Tenino 50, Hoquiam 6

Hoquiam returned to the field for the first time in nearly a month, falling 50-6 to Tenino on Friday in Tenino.

The Grizzlies (0-3, 0-1 1A Evergreen) played with less than a week of practice after being cleared to resume practice on Oct. 2 by Hoquiam School District officials.

Hoquiam, which last played a game on Sept. 10 after the district decided to suspend all high school athletic events due to COVID, was no match for the state’s 10th-ranked team in Tenino, which won its first league game in eight years with the victory.

“The scoreboard didn’t go our way but some of the kids played pretty well,” Hoquiam head coach Jeremy McMillan said, noting Jake Templer on defense, quarterback Zander Jump keeping his composure under pressure, the hard running of Nakota Brown and receiver Owen McNeill, who caught the Grizzlies’ only touchdown on a 19-yard pass with 3:14 left in the third quarter.

“With everything going on, I felt like the team did everything we could do,” McMillan said. “I am proud of the kids. You think about what was put in front of them, it’s pretty amazing to me.”

Napavine 48, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 3

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley struggled to stop a high-powered Napavine offense in a 48-3 loss on Friday in Napavine.

Big plays were a thorn in the side of the Titans (3-3, 3-3 2B Pacific), which allowed Gavin Parker touchdown runs of 28, 58 and 55 yards and gave up two touchdown passes for 88 and 98 yards.

Garrett Keeton scored PWV’s only points of the game, splitting the uprights with a 32-yard field goal to make it a 21-3 game with 3:50 left before halftime.

Napavine rushed for 341 yards to just 39 for PWV.

PWV quarterback Tyler Adkins went 8-for-11 with an interception and 91 yards.

Wil Clements caught three passes for 37 yards, had a team high six tackles and had an interception that set up Keeton’s field goal in the second quarter.

Morton-White Pass 36, Raymond-South Bend 27

Raymond-South Bend’s comeback attempt fell short in a 36-27 loss to Morton-White Pass on Friday at Morton High School.

MWP (3-2, 1-1 2B Pacific) jumped out to a 16-0 lead with two Carter Dantinne rushing touchdowns in the first quarter.

RSB (1-4, 1-2) rallied to cut the lead to 16-14 early in the second quarter on a 31-yard run by Austin Snodgrass and a 20-yard run by Ty Reidinger.

But MWP closed out the half with an 80-yard TD pass from Dantinne to Hunter Hazen followed by a 59-yard fumble recovery returned for a score by Ethan Chenowith to take a 30-14 lead at the half.

Snodgrass scored on a 39-yard run with 8:01 left in the third quarter followed by a 2-yard TD run from Ferrill Johnson as the Ravens cut the MWP lead to 30-27 by the start of the fourth quarter.

But MWP scored the only touchdown in the final frame on a 30-yard pass from Tony Sams to Hazen for the 36-27 final.

Reidinger led RSB with 30 carries for 136 yards and a touchdown.

Snodgrass had eight runs for 95 yards and two scores while Johnson added 70 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
