PREP BOYS SWIMMING
Aberdeen at Sprint Pentathlon
LONGVIEW — Aberdeen’s first competition of the season became a showcase of its underclassmen talent during Saturday’s Mark Morris Sprint Pentathlon at the Dick Mealy Memorial Natatorium.
Sophomore Tyler Bates finished 10th overall in individual scorers by racking up 57 1/2 points for the Bobcats. Bates scored in all five of his events, including two fourth-place finishes in the 25 individual medley and 100 backstroke, respectively.
“It was good to get back to competition and the excitement of a full pool deck this fall,” Aberdeen head coach Rob Burns said. “There were 18 schools and more than 150 swimmers at the meet. For many of the Bobcats, this was their first high school meet. For all of them, this was a good test to see where they are and what they need to improve upon as the season moves along.”
Two freshmen registered points for the Bobcats — Denny Linker and Jacob Hallack. Hallack took fourth overall in the 500 free, while Linker used a strong race in the 100 fly to finish eighth. Linker placed in three events, while Hallack placed in two events on the day.
Linker, Hallack and sophomores Jacob Natwick and Kevin Eng were cited for their performances by the coaches.
On Friday, Aberdeen will hit the road to take on Kelso in a non-league dual meet.
