A big night from star senior Tre’ Seydel led Raymond to a 67-51 victory over Ocosta in a 2B Pacific League contest on Saturday in Westport.
Seydel, who is averaging 28.5 points per game, scored 39 points that included a 16-for-18 (88%) night at the free-throw line.
The Seagulls got off to a hot start in the first quarter led by Seydel’s relentless assault on the basket. The senior guard consistently attacked the rim en route to 15 points in the first eight minutes of the game.
But despite Seydel’s efforts, Ocosta (4-+ overall, 2-6 2B Pacific) was well within striking distance, trailing 22-19 after the first quarter after hitting eight shots from the field in the frame, including two threes from guard Josh Figueroa.
But Wildcats turnovers took a toll in the second quarter, and Raymond (9-3, 6-3) took advantage.
Ocosta was held to just four points in the period while Raymond remained hot as Seydel scored 14 of Raymond’s 16 points in the period to take a commanding 38-23 lead into halftime.
“The two separating factors in the game were the sheer number of turnovers that we had, most of them unforced, and the second factor in the game was Tre’ going off for 41 points,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “He was on the attack from the start of the game.”
The second half was close as Raymond outscored Ocosta by a mere point at 19-18 as the Wildcats went to a full-court double-team on Seydel to force the ball out of his hands as much as possible.
Ocosta trimmed to lead to single digits at one point in the half, but Raymond converted free throws on an Ocosta delay of game technical foul that killed the Wildcats momentum.
In addition to Seydel, Raymond senior Adrian Quintana scored 17 points for the Seagulls.
Jaxson Freeman led Raymond with seven rebounds and was credited by Seagulls head coach Derek Rask as playing “a solid game for us defensively.”
“Ocosta is always a tough place to play. Their team plays hard and they made us work for everything tonight offensively,” Rask said. “This was our third game this week so I was proud of our guys for working hard and putting out great effort despite being a little fatigued.”
Ocosta had four players score in double figures as Mark Lewis (14 points, 9 rebounds), Xander Prigmore (12 pts., 4 reb.), Kevin Agramon (11 pts., 4 reb.) and Figueroa (10 pts., 6 reb.) scored in double digits for the Wildcats.
“Overall, our intensity was much better tonight and I thought we actually played pretty good defense as a team,” Quinby said. “I’ll take four guys scoring in double digits on any game, now we need to clean up our turnovers.”
Ocosta faces Wishkah Valley at 7 p.m. Monday at Wishkah Valley High School.
Raymond will face North Beach in a league game at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in Ocean Shores.

Elma made the clutch plays late to beat Northwest Christian 45-41 on Saturday in Elma.
The Eagles (5-5) trailed the Wolverines (4-11) by three late in the game when Elma senior Logan Witt scored on a 3-point play to tie the game with just over a minute remaining.
After a defensive stop by the Eagles, Traden Carter scored off an offensive rebound to give Elma the lead with just under a minute to go.
Carter then hit two free throws of a bonus 1-and-1 situation to seal the victory.
“NWC is better than their record indicates. They gave us everything we could handle,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said, lamenting his team’s poor shooting from close range, where he estimated it missed 15-20 layups. “We escaped and are happy with the win, but we have to get this fixed immediately or it won’t be pretty.”
Witt led Elma with 16 points with Carter adding 11 and senior Jerred Bailey adding eight points and a team high 11 rebounds.
