Longtime Grays Harbor resident Donald McArthur died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2022, at age 91. Born Jan. 28, 1930, in Spirit Lake, Idaho to Donald G. and Bernice (Rogers) McArthur, he came to Aberdeen with his parents in 1936. He graduated from Ocosta High School in 1947 and Grays Harbor College in 1950.
He started to work with Bell Telephone Co. as a lineman and served 44 years, mostly as a station repairman and the last eight years as a coin phone technician, retiring in 1995. Drafted for the Korean War, he served in the Signal Corps, returning from the Far East as a Sergeant.
In 1960, he married Verna Bebich. She survives him along with a daughter, Patricia (Tim Dolan) who resides in Vancouver.
In life, Don had many activities and interests: roller skating, riding his Harley Davidson, playing pool, photography and building models, but his main interest was collecting Japanese WW2 military artifacts and studying the war in the Pacific. He was a life member of the Westport VFW #3057 and the Telephone Pioneers of America, where he was a past president of the Harbor Club.
He will be missed by his family and many good friends that will remember him for his love of Grays Harbor and the community. At his request, there will be no funeral.
