In only her second varsity softball game, Aberdeen freshman pitcher Lilly Camp has made history.

Camp led Aberdeen to a 1-0 victory over Black Hills in a 2A Evergreen Conference-opener on Tuesday in Tumwater, doing so in spectacular fashion, striking out 18 in throwing a complete-game no-hitter on 69 pitches.

“Lilly Camp pitched a great game,” Bobcats head coach Jimmy McDaniel said. “Her spins were on point today, so we were able to locate the ball in quite a bit of ways. We kept the batters’ timing off with her off-speed pitches and it was exciting to watch her have the performance she had.”

Camp allowed no walks as just one runner — Wolves pitcher Zoey Theophilus — reached on a dropped third strike in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Though Camp was unhittable, the game was deadlocked in a scoreless tie through six innings as Theophilus held Aberdeen to just three hits and struck out 13 through six innings.

In the top of the seventh, Aberdeen’s Annie Boyle led off with a walk. Pinch runner Shyanna Patrick then advanced to second on a one-out ground out by right fielder Aili Scott. With two outs, outfielder Laynie Yakovich — who was 0-for-3 against Theophilus to that point — stepped to the dish and singled to left on an 0-2 pitch, driving home Patrick for a 1-0 Bobcats lead.

Camp and the Bobcats defense did the rest. The right-hander struck out Elena Jones to open the bottom of the seventh and got some help from Scott, who chased down a hard-hit fly ball off the bat of Theophilus for the second out of the inning. Camp then struck out Sam West on three straight pitches to end the game and finish off the dominant no-hit performance.

Scott, Yakovich, Emma Siano and Merryn Bruner collected hits for Aberdeen, with Siano’s being the only extra-base hit of the game on a two-out double in the sixth.

“The credit for this win is a full team effort,” McDaniel said. “Even though Lilly was able to strike out the 18 batters, this win doesn’t happen without the defense behind her, Annie getting on base, the huge hit Laynie had and Shyanna crossing home plate.”

Ocosta 25, South Bend 2

Ocosta smacked 15 hits en route to a dominant 25-2 four-inning victory over South Bend in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in South Bend.

Zaida Morales led the way for Ocosta (4-0 overall, 2B Pacific), going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and five RBI.

Trinity White (2-5, 2 2B, 3R, 5RBI), Jolisa Schlegel (3-3, 2B, 2R, 4RBI) and Jessie Gilbert (2-3, 2B, 3R, 4RBI) also had big games at the plate for the Wildcats.

Gilbert picked up the win, allowing two runs (none earned) on no hits with 14 strikeouts in four innings pitched.

South Bend (0-2) scored two runs without a hit or walk in the bottom of the third when three straight batters reached on dropped third strikes.

Gilbert struck out the side in the frame, giving her what is possibly a school record with six strikeouts in an inning.

Annika Hollingsworth tied a school record for strikeouts in a game as Ocosta swept a doubleheader with a 10-2 win over South Bend in the nightcap.

Hollingsworth struck out 15 batters and allowed just four hits in a seven-inning complete-game performance.

The mark tied a school record for most strikeouts in a game with Shelby Pace, who set the record approximately 8-10 years ago.

Outfielder Brynn Rasmus led the Wildcats with three hits — including two doubles — in the game.

Ocosta led 3-2 before erupting for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Rasmus belting a two-run, two-out double in the frame.
